Rationale 1. This area of study is important
because students need to become aware of their
environment and the environments of others. 2.
Students need to learn about different societys
and how they are to interact within these
societys in order to become upright citizens. 3.
Students need to learn about the various types
of people they might come into contact with
throughout their lives. They need to know these
peoples history and how they have developed
through time in order to respect their culture.

Goal To have students recognize the similarities
and differences between their culture and the
culture of others.

Objectives 1. The student will be able to place
historical events into a chronological
sequence. 2. The student will be able to
recognize problems in society and the effects
these problems have on communities. 3. The
student will be able to describe how people in
different societies make their living. 4. The
student will be able to recognize why rules are
important and how they work differently in
different societies. 5. The student will be able
to describe changes in communities through the
activities of others.

buy the items they think will last longer and
help them to survive if they were only given

poorer countries have access to and how that is
different from the resources the United States
have.

to and what their reasoning would be behind their

clearly shows the United States along with other
countries and discuss the physical features of

of people that have authority and discuss reasons
for having people in authority. 5. Have students
research the rules that govern our state and
discuss the importance of each rule.

countries and communities around them. 4. Have
students organize a community clean-up. 5. Have
students develop several global solutions to the
problems in the world such as poverty, natural
disasters, etc.

Conclusion This lesson should have brought the
students to a beginning understanding of the way
cultures develop and live. Hopefully they
learned to respect the differences in others and
to look for similarities in order for them to
understand other cultures.
