Geological Model Working Group task
  • Design 3-D Elastic model that is
  • Computable in 3-D as an acoustic model (e.g Vp,
    r) by the end of 2007
  • Contains challenging and realistic structures
(salt bodies and faults) and velocity variations
    (shallow gas, low-velocity under salt,
overpressure) to test the limits of present and
future 3-D seismic (acquisition and imaging)
    technologies
  • Contains 2-3 reservoirs with complex and
    realistic architecture and that produce
interesting AVO effects when computed as an
    acoustic model (e.g. Vp, r)
  • Is ready for fluid-flow simulation and
    computation of elastic/acoustic time-lapse
    surveys
  • Identify in the 3-D Elastic model one or two 2-D
    slices
  • Suitable for elastic 2.5-D modeling (single line
of 3-D point source elastic modeling)
  • Suitable for non-seismic modeling/inversion, in
    particular for
  • Gravity
  • Active-sources EM
  • Magneto-telluric
  • ..

5
Geological Model Working Group Numerical
Modeling Working Group
  • Determine parameters of 3-D Elastic model that
define a realistic computational task and capture
    important features of the model
  • Determine maximum frequency needed to resolve
    reservoir stratigraphy
  • Determine shot-aperture and recording time to
capture all dips (overturned events?) present in
    the model
  • Determine spatial sampling to avoid spatial
    aliasing
  • Define model representation(s), software tools,
    and appropriate interfaces

6
SEG Convention Workshop Goal Gather momentum
before and at SEG convention to secure wide
support for the project (e.g. sign up 20-25
paying companies).
  • Conceptual design of 3-D elastic model
  • Cross-validation of numerical code against Delft
    physical model (ZMAART)
  • Organizational structure and legal framework
  • Detailed plan for computations (Grid vendors,
    spare time on companies clusters)
  • Initial plan for archival and distribution
    (including data compression)
  • Involved sister societies (SPE and AAPG) and
    non-seismic SEG members
  • Firm commitments by founding members

7
Objectives of this meeting
  • Finalize charter and membership of Geological
    Model Working Group
  • Agree on main elements of 3-D Elastic model (e.g.
    salt typology, reservoir stratigraphy, velocity
    anomalies)
  • Agree on main contributors to each of these
    elements
  • Agree on model representation and software tools.
  • Agree on time-table for Geological Model Working
    Group from now to SEG.
  • Make progress toward formation of Numerical
    Modeling Working Group
  • Make progress toward finalizing organizational
    structure of SEG Modeling Consortium
  • Discuss nominations for Project Manager position
and agree on a recommendation to the Executive
Committee of the SEG Modeling Consortium
