Nouns

• A noun is the name of a person, place, or thing.
• The ants crawled over the daisy.

• A concrete noun names a person, place, or thing
  you can see or touch.
• Ex Sailor, mother, zoo, Louisiana, guitar, list
• An abstract noun names an idea or quality.
• Ex fun, love, honesty, faith, thought

• A proper noun names a particular person, place,

Verbs

• A verb is a word that expresses action or a state
  of being.
• Marine biologists observe the creatures of the
  sea.
• Our class studied water mammals.

• A verb phrase includes a main verb plus any
  helping, or auxiliary, verbs.
• Common helping verbs
• Be am, is, are, was, were, am, be, being, been
• Have has, have, had
• Do do, does, did
• Others may, might, must, can, could, should,
  shall, should, will, would
• I have never seen a killer whale

Verbs

• A transitive verb is an action verb that passes
  the action from doer to a receiver.
• Many birds eat insects.
• An intransitive verb expresses action but does
  not pass action from a doer to a receiver.
• Most geese travel in flocks.

• An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or
  pronoun.
• What kind?
• The silent crowd watched the film.
• Which one(s)?
• That role was written for the actress.
• How many?
• Thirty people stood in line to buy a ticket.
• How much?
• He deserves much praise for his performance.

• An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an
  adjective, or another adverb.
• Recently my family voted unanimously for a
  vacation in the national forest.

• I sometimes sleep in a tent.
• How?
• I carefully approached the deer.
