  • Suggest that they call so you can walk them

Other volunteer recruitment
  • www.craigslist.org
  • Although the site is primarily used for other
purposes, weve gotten a lot of response from
volunteers off this site. The only annoying thing
is that youll need to repost every 7 days.
  • Go to www.craigslist.org, and on the left top
click post to classifieds. To make it easier
youll want to have an account click apply for
account on the upper right hand side. When
youre ready to post, go under community to
    find volunteers.
  • This website is slightly tedious and hasnt been
too successful in Boston or Los Angeles.
  • About half way down the page click register your
organization. This will guide you through the
process. Be prepared with your organizations
    mission statement, description, history, and
    contact information.
  • Next you can add opportunities. Click on the
opportunities tab, and towards the bottom,
    click add an opportunity.

1
2
37
Other volunteer recruitment
  • www.servenet.org
  • Click the tab help for nonprofits. On the left
click post volunteer opportunity. Once you
login you will be able to post opportunities. You
can also click edit volunteer opportunity (also
on the right) to see outdated opportunities.

1
2
38
Other volunteer recruitment
  • www.Idealist.org
  • Not a ton of response from people, but easy to
list. Go to http//www.idealist.org and click
"Sign Up." A message will be sent to your email
address to verify your account. Once you get the
email, go to the Member Login field on the right
side. On the next page, click the tab titled "My
Groups." Then, click "Add New". Click to add your
organization that is already listed on Idealist
(the first option). Enter TechMission, Inc.
Password short. Then, when the name of your
organization appears, click on the "Manage"
    option.

Work-Study Students

45
What is work-study?
  • As part of their financial aid packet, college
students can earn a certain amount of money by
    working.
  • Most of this money is earned through on-campus
jobs, but the US Department of Education requires
that 7 of all work-study funds go to jobs
    serving in community and faith-based
    organizations.
  • Schools pay up to 75 of the cost of these
positions with sites paying as little as 25.

1
2
4
3
46
Advantages of work-study
  • While the service site pays very little money,
the student perceives the position as a job.
  • For very little you get the commitment of a paid
    staff person!
  • Work-study can be earned at a faith-based
organization as long as the student is not being
paid to engage in faith activities (leading
    prayer, teaching Bible, etc.)
  • You cant hire work-study students based on their
faith. However, you may target your recruiting to
    faith-based groups.

48
Placing work-study student
  • Have the student find out (from the financial aid
office) if they definitely qualify for work
    study.
  • Interview candidate.
  • Get pay rate from college and confirm with
    program / site director.
  • The school will pay a percentage of the students
pay (usually between 50-75) and the program /
site will be required to pay the rest. The school
will also want to approve the pay rate, although
the site has some flexibility with what they want
    to pay.

1
2

3
49
Placing work-study student
  • Inform Director of Operations about work study
    hires.
  • Fill out required paperwork to register its
    different for each school.
  • Fill out paperwork for position. Both the site
and the student will need to fill this out.
  • The service site director will need to make sure
that the student fills out timesheets. She will
sign them and fax them to the college. Confirm
    that this happens.
  • The school will pay the student and bill the site
for the portion of the students wages.

Appendix Sample email
  • Dear Volunteer Coordinator,
  • My name is Theresa Musante, and Im the Volunteer
    Network Coordinator with ChristianVolunteering.org
, which is a web-based ministry with the goal of
connecting 100,000 volunteers to thousands of
    ministries across the world.
  • I saw that you have some of your volunteer
positions listed online. I thought you might be
interested in posting your listings (for free) on
    www.ChristianVolunteering.org. I hope that this
email has reached the right person If you
arent in charge of volunteers and/or interns,
would you mind forwarding this email to the
    correct person?
  • ChristianVolunteering.org connects high-quality
    Christian volunteers with Christian social
    service organizations, urban ministries, and
churches (like yours) in order to transform
vulnerable communities. There are three types of
postings that you can make on our website
  • Local Volunteer Postings For people who come to
your location to volunteer on a regular basis or
    volunteer one time.
  • Short-term Opportunity Posting People who
    participate in short-term missions opportunities
    or internships (international or domestic).
  • Virtual Volunteer Postings People who volunteer
via computer, telephone, or fax without ever
coming to your location. This is especially
helpful for tech, administrative, or professional
    services.
  • I encourage you to go to the website and look
around. Check it out. Register and see the
response you get from volunteers. Heres how to
    register
  • On our website you will also find training for
you and for potential volunteers. Make use of
    these valuable resources!
  • If you have any questions, feel free to contact
    me at Theresa_at_techmission.org or 617-282-9798
    x109.

Appendix Sample Email
  • We have developed a collaboration with
    TechMission and their ChristianVolunteering.org
website to help CCDA members post volunteer
    opportunities online at http//ccda.christianvolun
    teering.org. The site connects Christian
    volunteers with Christian social service
organizations, urban ministries, and churches in
order to transform vulnerable communities. The
goal of the site is to place over 10,000
volunteers in thousands of ministries in the next
few years. Hopefully this project could help
expand the number of volunteers in CCDA member
organizations by making it easier to find
    volunteer opportunities.
  • To get started you can
  • Post volunteer opportunities online at
    http//ccda.christianvolunteering.org
  • Put a volunteer opportunities search form on your
website by following the instructions at
    http//ccda.christianvolunteering.org/org.do?metho
    dshowPasteForms
  • They are eager to get feedback on the site and to
make it meet the needs of CCDA member
organizations, so if you have any feedback or
feature requests, send it to Theresa_at_techmission.o
rg. TechMission draws much of its ministry
philosophy from CCDA and was started based on the
needs identified by discussions of CCDA
members. They have been working to actively
collaborate with us and have assisted in our
    conference with technology workshops and
    support.

Appendix Sample Email
  • Hello Mr. Vega,
  • Thanks for talking today.
  • Im the Volunteer Network Coordinator with
    www.ChristianVolunteering.org, which is a
web-based ministry with the goal of connecting
100,000 volunteers to thousands of urban
    ministries and short-term missions organizations
across the world. Volunteers just type in their
zip code to find a list of Christian volunteer
opportunities or search by interest area or
skills.  Organizations can also post their
opportunities for free. Our hope is that this
website will draw Christians out of the church
and into their community to serve. Wed love to
see people with valuable skills investing their
    energy into at-risk communities.
  • Were currently creating local portal for our
website see the first one at boston.christianvol
unteering.org. Wed love to create a Los Angeles
portal next, as we have connections to urban
ministry in LA through Heres Life Inner City and
Urban Youth Workers Institute. The local portals
are sections of the website with local content
and cobranding with local ministries. Wed love
it if Fuller would be interested in partnering
with us on this local portal. Could I talk with
you more about this, or could you direct me to
    the correct person?
  • I can be reached at 617-282-9798 x109 or
    theresa_at_techmission.org.
  • Blessings,
  • Theresa
