  • St. Francis agreed and went there for nine months
    along with several Jesuits

India
  • He worked day and night in India trying to
    convert the pagans in India.
  • He faced persecution but was able to baptize many
  • Some say he baptized so many people his arm
    became disabled

8
  • During his Missionaries, he preached the Gospel,
while struggling to learn the native languages
  • Along the Indian Coast he baptized and instructed
great numbers of native Christians who had been
ill treated by the European Colonists

9
Change of plans?
  • In December 1547 in Malacca St. Francis Xavier
met someone who would change the direction of his
    entire missionary work
  • He met a Japanese nobleman named Anjiro who fled
    from Japan
  • He was also a samurai

10
JAPAN
11
Missionary in Japan
  • There were only 2000 Christians before St.
Francis Xavier arrived to Japan with Anjiro
  • In 1549 he entered Japan, with the help of some
Japanese converts he had a translation made of
Christian teaching, and he then recited it to all
    who would listen
  • A small number of Japanese were converted and
these people became the faithful foundation of
    the church in Japan
  • The Japanese priests made it even harder for him

12
  • In Japan he found it very hard to obtain a
audience with the people of Miyako
  • Francis returned to India in 1551
  • He was appointed provincial of the newly erected
    Province of India
  • Wherever he went, he lived with the poorest
people, sharing their food and their living
conditions and ministering to the poor and sick
  • He traveled thousands of miles to the most
inaccessible of places under horrible conditions,
    and converted hundreds of thousands
  • His missionary impacted the East of India for
    centuries

13
China
  • Xavier wanted to go to China
  • Not for the dim sum though.
  • He wanted to go there and preach
  • However on the way his caught a fever on the way
    and died December 3rd 1552

14
