7NZ DEFENCE POLICY OBJECTIVES
- To defend New Zealand, and to protect its people,
land, territorial waters, EEZ, and natural
resources. - To meet our alliance commitments to Australia by
maintaining a close defence partnership in
pursuit of common security interests. - To assist in the maintenance of security in the
South Pacific and to provide assistance to our
Pacific neighbours. - To play an appropriate role in the maintenance of
security in the Asia-Pacific region, including
meeting our obligations as a member of the Five
Power Defence Arrangements. - To contribute to global security and peacekeeping
through participation in the full range of United
Nations and other appropriate multilateral peace
support and humanitarian operations
8Our Roles

- To manage and develop the process of deriving and
disseminating future concepts for NZDF capability
development. - Capability concept research and development
- Secondary
- To manage and promote concept development that
informs the Strategic Capability Planning Process.
9Key Responsibilities
- Estimating all aspects of the future New Zealand
security environment. Focus 10-20 years. - Researching future concepts and capabilities of
relevance to that environment. - Identifying future capability gaps.
- Deriving capability requirements with rigour and
confidence for the purposes of force development
and acquisition planning.
10More Specifically
- Lead research into emerging concepts, trends,
technologies etc and analyse their utility and/or
impact on the future NZDF. - Lead the systematic development, maintenance,
review and communication of Strategic Trends
Assessments. - Manage the development, maintenance, review and
communication of the Joint Vision. - Manage the development, maintenance, review and
communication of the NZDF Operating Concepts. - Contribute to the development of Defence Policy.
- Contribute to the development, maintenance and
review of Defence Future Planning Scenarios. - Lead cross portfolio project teams within the
Directorate. - Contribute to HQNZDF special projects teams as
required. - Make a direct contribution to the annual review
of the Enduring Strategic Guidance component of
the Strategic Capability Planning Processes.
