ABVP
  • Founded in 1978
  • One goal is to certify practitioners with
exceptional skill, knowledge and ability in the

veterinary care available to the public
  • Competition with discipline oriented specialties
is not intended, we serve a different function

Why I am a Diplomate
  • Identifies me as a practitioner of dedication and
knowledge to both clients and colleagues
  • Encourages me to keep learning. Validates my
intrinsic thirst for new knowledge and skills
  • Provides a peer group of practitioners who share
    similar values
  • If I had never passed the exam or credentialing
process, I would still be a better doctor for the
    efforts. This matters to me

11
The ABVP Process
  • 6th year of practice after graduation
  • credentialing (Application, case reports)
  • Exam- Eligible after successful credentialing.
  • 3 sections
  • 2 200 multiple choice exams plus a practical.
  • 3 years in which to complete all portions of usr.
  • A residency pathway exists but this is the
exception to the rule. Most diplomates have
    utilized the practice pathway.

12
Recertification
  • Required every 10 years
  • Ensures maintenance of highest standards
    throughout practitioners clinical lifetime
  • Pathways
  • Examination
