Scene 1
  • Summary
  • Macbeth enters to approach the witches about his
    role as king. The witches summon three
    apparitions an armed head, a bloody child, and a
    child crowned with a tree in his hand. The three
    apparitions are to warn Macbeth of Macduff and
    say that no man born of woman can harm him. He is
    assured that then his confidence is shaken when
    the witches show him a line of kings in the image
    of Banquo. After the witches disappear Macbeth
    learns that Macduff has fled to England and
    decides to kill his entire family.

  • Because of the prophecy Macbeth thinks he will
    die a normal death because there is no way trees
    can walk and no man could be born without a
    mother.

Scene 2
  • Summary Ross went to visit Lady Macduff and
    tries to explain Macduff fleeing to England.
    After Ross leaves a messenger arrives and advises
    Lady Macduff to flee as well. Before she has a
    chance to get away, her and her son are attacked
    by Macbeths men.

  • Important Things
  • P. 133 lines 17-30. Ross still believes Macduff
    has reason for fleeing to England.
  • P. 137 lines 71-80. This quote by the messenger
    serves as a warning to Lady Macduff and her
    family. This is foreshadowing the attack on the
    Macduff castle.
  • P. 133 lines 4- 16. Lady Macduff, however, has
    less faith in her husbands actions.

Scene 3
  • Summary Macduff goes to the English court where
    he finds Malcolm and persuades him to attack
    Macbeth. Malcolm is suspicious of Macduff because
    he believes that Macduff was sent by Macbeth.
    After Malcolm discovers that Macduff is sincere,
    Malcolm reveals that Edward, the king of England,
    has ten thousand troops ready for the invasion of
    Scotland. Ross then comes and reveals that
    Macduffs castle has been slaughtered by Macbeths
    men. Ross and Malcolm then persuade Macduff to
    convert his grief into anger.

  • Important Things
  • P. 139-140 lines 10-20. Malcolm is talking with
    Macduff and shows signs of concern that Macduff
    is still loyal to Macbeth. Malcolm thinks that
    Macduff might be using him to pay a favor back to
    Macbeth.
  • P. 147 lines 133-156. Malcolm believes that
    Macduff is sincere.
