2How Western got their nickname
- The Broncos nickname dates back to 1939 and was
submitted by a WMU alumnus John Gill. - Before the name Broncos came along, the nickname
Hill Toppers was used reflecting the colleges
original Prospect Hill campus. - The name Hill Topper was changed due to other
institutions having a similar name. - Later in 1988, Buster Bronco became Westerns
mascot and is well known by everyone still today.
