How Western got their nickname
  • The Broncos nickname dates back to 1939 and was
submitted by a WMU alumnus John Gill.
  • Before the name Broncos came along, the nickname
Hill Toppers was used reflecting the colleges
    original Prospect Hill campus.
  • The name Hill Topper was changed due to other
    institutions having a similar name.
  • Later in 1988, Buster Bronco became Westerns
mascot and is well known by everyone still today.
