Purpose for Submission
  • Ensure lasting effect for SC education program
  • Secure additional funding for program
  • Obtain resources to broaden the base of
    participating teachers
  • Obtain resources to broaden the types of
    participating school districts

6
Proposal Goals
  • Determine how computational science can be
incorporated more effectively into the high
    school curriculum
  • Explore effectiveness of the technology for high
    school teacher collaborations
  • Create and make available standards-based
    curriculum modules
  • Institutionalize computational science as part of
    the high school curriculum
  • Modify pre-service teacher training based on
    project results

7
Program Outline
  • Two cadres 100 HS teachers each cadre, 4
    teachers per team
  • 18 month program
  • Kick-off at SC2000 or SC2001
  • Monthly seminars/videoconferences
  • Summer Institute (2 weeks)
  • Assessment of impact in the classroom

8
Teachers Will Learn
  • Fundamentals of computational science
  • Presentation of computational science topics in
the framework of the national science and
    mathematics standards
  • How to create computational science curriculum
    modules
  • Remote usage of computational resources
  • Best practices

9
Computational Science Topics
  • Computational biochemistry (Biology Workbench)
  • Computational chemistry (atomic motion, chemical
    reactions,
  • Computational physics (modeling of physical
    systems)
  • Environmental science (air quality modeling)

10
School District Requirements
  • Laptop for each teacher to use during the project
  • Access to an ISP
  • Opportunities during teacher workshop days to
    present to peers
  • One CEU for each 10 contact hours

11
Teacher Benefits
  • Teacher travel to SC conference and the Summer
    Institute
  • Teacher stipends for Summer Institute
  • Substitute teacher pay for SC conference
  • National support through the Internet
  • Up to 18 CEUs through 180 contact hours of
    instruction
  • Grants available

12
Teacher Selection Criteria
  • Letter from school principal or administrator
guaranteeing school support for the project
  • Evaluation of a submitted portfolio of science
    and/or mathematics modules
  • Teaching awards received
  • Need a broad mix of school districts

13
Assistance Needed For
