abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that works in us, to
Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all

Petitions.

every knee should bow (Phil. 210) - Your Will Be Done that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven

26Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Application 1 To reprove us for how little we
are concerned for Gods glory.
27Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Psalm 119136
- Rivers of tears run down mine eyes, because men
keep not thy law.
28Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Thomas Manton, ca. 1660
- Oh, how little do we aim at and regard it in our
prayers! Alas! we are wholly poisoned with
self-love we prefer every base interest and
trifle before God nay, we prefer carnal self
before God. - Some are wholly brutish and so they may wallow
in ease and pleasure, and eat the fat and drink
the sweet, never think of God, care not how God
is dishonoured, both by themselves and others.
29Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Manton continued
- And then some are more affected with their own
honour, and their own loss and reproach, than
with Gods dishonour or Gods glory. If their own
reputation be but hazarded a little, oh, how it
stings them to the heart! A word of disgrace, a
little contempt cast upon our persons, kindles
the coals and fills us with rage but we can hear
Gods name dishonoured, and not be moved with it.
30Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Manton continued
- When we pray, if we beg outward blessings, if we
ask anything, it is for our lusts, not for God
it is but to feed our pomp and excess, and that
we may shine in the pomp and splendour of
external accommodations. - If we beg daily bread, maintenance, and
protection, we do not beg it as a talent to be
improved for our master's use, but as fuel for
our lusts.
31Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Manton continued
- If we beg deliverance, it is because we are in
pain, and ill at ease not that we may honour and
glorify God, that mercy and truth may shine
forth. - If we beg pardon, it is only to get rid of the
smart, and be enlarged out of the stocks of
conscience. - If we beg grace, it is but a lazy wish after
sanctification, because we are convinced there is
no other way to be happy.
32Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Manton continued
- If they beg eternal glory, they do not beg it
for God, it appears plainly, because they can be
content to dishonour God long, provided they at
length may be saved. - Yea, if a mans heart be not duly set as to the
glory of God, his prayer is turned into sin.
33Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Zechariah 75-6
- When ye fasted, did ye at all fast unto me, even
to me? And when ye did eat, and when ye did
drink, did you not eat for yourselves, and drink
for yourselves?
34Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- James 48-10
- Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners and purify your
hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn
and weep let your laughter be turned into
mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves
in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt
you.
35Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Application 1 To reprove us for how little we
are concerned for Gods glory. - Application 2 To exhort us to be content with
our loss so that Gods name may be glorified.
36Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Loss In Suffering
- John 1227-28 Now My soul is troubled, and
what shall I say? Father, save Me from this
hour? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
Father, glorify Your name. Then a voice came
from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it
and will glorify it again.
37Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Loss In Suffering
- Philippians 119-20 For I know that this will
turn out for my deliverance according to my
earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I
shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as
always, so now also Christ will be magnified in
my body, whether by life or by death.
38Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Manton, ca. 1660
- We need to deal with God that we may have the
end, and leave the means to his own choosing
that God may be glorified in our condition,
whatever it be. - If he will have us rich and full, that he might
be glorified in our bounty - If he will have us poor and low, that he may be
glorified in our patience - If he will have us healthy, that he may be
glorified in our labour
39Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Manton (continued)
- If he will have us sick, that he may be
glorified in our pain - If he will have us live, that he may be
glorified in our lives - If he will have us die, that he may be glorified
in our deaths - And therefore, Whether we live or die, we are
the Lord's Rom. 149.
40Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Because of Gods Glory We Trust His Providence In
ALL Things.
41Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Loss In Being Wronged
- 1 Corinthians 67 Now therefore, it is already
an utter failure for you that you go to law
against one another. Why do you not rather accept
wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be
cheated? - unfair criticismundue irritationunloving
treatmentunwise choices
42Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Application 1 To reprove us for how little we
are concerned for Gods glory. - Application 2 To exhort us to be content with
our loss so that Gods name may be glorified. - Application 3 To remind us to use our
blessings, once we have received them, for Gods
glory.
43Hallowed Be Your NameTo God Be The Glory
- Luke 169
- And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by
means of the mammon of unrighteousness, so that
when it fails, they will receive you into the
eternal dwellings.
44An Exhortation To Pray
- As we progress in our study and consider the
majestic greatness of God, His love that passes
understanding, His readiness to hear our
petitions and His infinite power which enables
Him to answer them, why should it be necessary to
urge people to continue steadfastly in prayer? - Add to this mans weakness and constant need for
divine help in meeting the problems of life, it
becomes all the more difficult to understand our
neglect of this marvelous privilege and power. .
. .
45An Exhortation To Pray
- Does it not then become a sin if we omit this
great responsibility and essential to spiritual
life and growth? - Let each ask himself, Do I really pray? If the
answer is no, from this moment make a change in
this exercise of infinite value. Homer
Hailey, Prayer and Providence, p. 14
