Why is the Western Ring Route needed?
  • The WRR
  • Provides a strategic alternative to SH1 and the
    Auckland Harbour Bridge
  • Delivers more predictable travel times and links
    major residential and commercial areas,
    particularly between west and south
  • Boosts Aucklands economy
  • Complements investment in rail and public
    transport
  • Connects Manukau, Waitakere, Auckland and North
    Shore cities

Option selection
  • Consultation since 2000
  • Numerous alignments considered
  • Waterview interchange endorsed by councils in
    2005 and confirmed by Transit in 2006
  • Community resisted level of disruption associated
    with cut and cover option and asked for further
    undergrounding
  • Investigation of undergrounding
  • Tunnel announced as preferred option in February
    2008

  • Minimises
  • Overall social and environmental disruption
  • Construction effects which are confined to
    portals and interchanges -these effects would
    apply to all other options
  • Impacts on parks, reserves and Oakley Creek
  • Shorter route
  • Maximises community calls for more undergrounding

Air Emissions
  • Final decisions on tunnel emission
    management/vent location/ appearance have yet to
    be made










  • An assessment of the air quality effects of the
    project is still being produced and is not
    expected until the end of September
  • The report will be made available on the project
    website and a further workshop will be held in
    mid October to discuss it
  • Workshop feedback will be reported to the NZTA
    board.
