4The Truth Is
- Off shoring has occurred in manufacturing and
service sectors - There will be economic cycles that affect
employment in every sector - Increases in productivity have affected
manufacturing more than economic cycles have - Improvements in productivity will continue to
change the manufacturing sector
5California Manufacturing?
Public perception of 21st Century Manufacturing
is not in-line with reality
6Downey, we have a problem!
- The City of Downey has been the site of aviation
ingenuity since 1929, when ranch land was
converted into an airport and aircraft
manufacturing facility - For the next 70 years the site and facilities
continued to be developed, expanded and utilized
for aircraft manufacture, missile design and
development, and ultimately for the design and
production of Apollo command and service modules
and production of the Space Shuttle Orbiters - Downey California was the center of Americas
lunar space program - The Downey plant built 17 space modules
- 6 for unmanned test flights and 11 for manned
flights - The script of the movie Apollo 13 changed to
Houston, we have a problem! - Thus noting that America no longer associated
Downey, California to the space program

the perception - Aerospace has seen job loss due to
- The economy
- Out-of-state relocation
- Productivity
- On the other hand, some relocations outside of
California have not worked as well as expected
