  • Alcapone was born in Brooklyn, New York, in
    1899,of an immigrant family
  • He quit school after sixth grade and became
    associated with a notorious street gang.
  • In 1920, he Came to Chicago to join the Colosimo
    mob

  • The Colosimo mob were involved in legitimate
    business, they cultivated influence with public
    officials, labor unions and employees
    associations.
  • These was a cover up for there illegal brewing,
    distilling and distribution of beer and liquor.

  • In 1925 became the head of the Colosimo mob.
  • He was ruthless and fearless among rival gangs in
    the so-called Beer War
  • He controlled all the buying and selling of
    illegal alcohol in Chicago. By 1930, Capone
    boasted an annual income of 70m.

  • The city policemen, politicians and judges were
    not left out as Capone paid them for permission
    to sell alcohol.
  • Chicagoans could easily purchase beer or any form
    of alcohol the quickest way was to ask a police
    officer for directions to the nearest store.

THE ST. VALENTINES DAY MASSACRE.

  • The 1929 massacre of 7 members of the rival gang
    by Al Capone's men changed a lot of things.
  • This presented Chicago in a bad light to the
    nation and Chicagoans demanded an ended to city
    gangsterism.

  • With the killing and smuggling going around,
    Capone cultivated a positive public image and
    people saw him as a decent man.
  • He paid medical bills of enemies whom his tough
    roughed up, and occasionally distributed coal,
    groceries and clothing to the poor.

  • Everything came crumbling down on October 18,
    1931when the mob king was found guilty of tax
    evasion and prohibition charges.
  • He was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison,
    fined 50, 000 and charged 7,692 for court fees,
    in addition to 215,000 plus interest due on back
    taxes.

  • Al Capone was released 7 years later, having paid
    all fines and back taxes.
  • He suffered from paresis derived from syphilis
    and was mentally incapable of returning to
    gangland politics.
  • He died on January 25, 1947 due to stroke and
    pneumonia.
