Sikhs believe in earning their living honestly
through hard work, and sharing what they earn
with the poor.
The langar is a free community meal served at
Sikh Gurdwaras to all comers, whatever their
religious belief. A Gurdwara usually has four
doors to show that it is open to all.
5 The Cyrus Cylinder, which dates from the
Persian Empire, is possibly the first
declaration of Human Rights.

The inscription, on a clay barrel, refers to the
freeing of Babylonian slaves. The cylinder is
kept in the British Museum.
6 Muslims are expected to give 2.5 of their
earnings to charity. After Ramadan they should
give an amount about equal to the price of a
meal.

In 1850 Dr Charles West began fundraising for
a childrens hospital in London.
By St Valentines Day in 1852 he had raised
enough money to buy a property in Great Ormond
Street, and his vision became a reality.
10 Around 130,000 poor and orphaned children were
shipped to countries in the British Empire over
350 years, supposedly to give them the chance of
a better life.

The patron saint of nursing is St Camillus of
Lellis. Born in 1550, he lost all his money as a
result of gambling.
He become a nurse in a hospital in Rome (Italy)
where he cared for people suffering from the
plague.

The Salvation Armys Missing Persons Service was
set up in 1885. 1000s of people are traced
every year, on behalf of their families.
In 1998 they reunited a brother and sister who
had been separated for 81 years!

Of the 2,749 people who lost their lives in the
World Trade Centre on September 11th 2001, 343
were brave firemen who had gone into the
buildings to rescue workers, while everyone else
was running to get away.
