Title: Fight MRSA!

1
Fight MRSA!
  • Fighting MRSA is all about fighting the spread of
    germs.
  • Germs are microorganisms. Microorganisms are tiny
little living things. Yes, living things!

2
MRSA GERMS
  • Germs are alive and want to stay that way! Lucky
for us, most germs are easy to kill.
  • And, even though MRSA is one of the stronger
germs, we still can kill it by preventing it from
    spreading from person to person.

3
How do germs live?
  • To stay alive, germs need to get inside of a
person, usually through the nose, mouth, eyes, or
openings in the skin like cuts or scrapes.
  • Most germsincluding MRSAcant survive in the
air, so something has to carry them to our nose,
mouth, eyes, or wounds. And, that something is
    our hands!
  •

4
Stop the spread of germs
  • When we stop the spread of germs, we help to
reduce illness in our families, schools, and
    communities.
  • Covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze or
cough is a way to keep your germs to yourself.

5
CLEAN HANDS!
  • If we kill the germs while theyre on our hands,
we prevent them from getting close enough to get
    inside of us!
  • Its human nature for us to use our hands to put
food in our mouths, to scratch our noses, rub our
eyes, or touch our wounds. Thats why its so
important for us to wash our hands as often as we
    can throughout the day!
  •

6
WASH YOUR HANDS
  • You already know how to wash your hands, right?
  • Well, maybe you do and maybe you dont. Take a
    look and see.

7
WHEN TO WASH YOUR HANDS
  • You should wash your hands as often as possible
throughout the day. There are some places and
times when it is especially important.
  • In the kitchen, its especially important to wash
your hands before, during, and after you prepare
food. If somebody else prepared the food, you
just have to worry about washing your hands
    before you eat.

8
In the bathroom
  • In the bathroom, its especially important to
wash your hands when youre finished.
  • If theres a baby in the house, wash your hands
every time you change a diaper.

9
WHEN TO WASH YOUR HANDS
  • When youre around sick people, its time to wash
    your hands!
  • If you touch money, wash your hands frequently,
  • Do your hands look dirty? Its time to wash your
    hands!

10
WHEN TO WASH YOUR HANDS
  • If youre around animals or animal waste, wash
    your hands!
  • After every workout or sporting activity, its
    time to wash your hands!
  • Got pimples? Cuts? Scrapes? Sores? Bug bites?
    Wash your hands!
  • Do your hands look dirty? Its time to wash your
    hands!

11
How to wash your hands
  • Step 1. Turn on the water and get your hands wet.
Running water is better than standing water in a
bowl. Apply soap to your wet hands.

12
How long does it take?
  • Step 2. Scrub your hands by rubbing your hands
together firmly, making sure that you get both
sides, between your fingers, and around your
fingernails. Keep rubbing the soap around for 20
    seconds!

13
How long does it take?
  • Seriously, a good hand-washing takes 20 seconds!
Get in the habit of counting to 20.
  • Some people sing the Happy Birthday song twice,
which takes about 20 seconds. You can sing to
yourself or sing out loud! When youre finished,
youll have clean hands and a smile on your face!

14
ELBOWS?
  • Step 3. Rinse your hands with clean, running
water until all of the soap is gone.
  • Now your hands are clean but the water faucet
probably has germs on it. Dont touch the faucet
with your clean hands! Use your elbow! If thats
    too tricky, use a towel.

15
Use a clean towel
  • Step 4. Dry your hands with a clean towel.  Paper
    towels are best.
  • Cloth towels used  by other people can contain
germs, so youll just be inviting germs back onto
    your hands!

16
How do I get out of here?
  • Now, youve got your clean, dry, germ-free hands!
Dont touch the doorknob! Doorknobs, especially
in bathrooms or locker rooms, are known to be
    loaded with germs!
  • Use a paper towel between your clean hand and the
knob. If the bathroom only had air dryers, try
using your elbow. If all else fails, wait for
somebody else to open the door!

17
How else can I kill the germs?
  • Sometimes, washing your hands with soap and water
just isnt possible. Thats no excuse for letting
    MRSA win!
  • Hand sanitizers and disposable wipes can help
fight MRSA too. Make sure that you use the kind
that are at least 62 alcohol. Rub all over your
    hands and let them dry.

18
What else can I do?
  • Besides washing your hands often throughout the
day, there are some other things you can do to
    prevent the spread of germs.
  • Try to keep your hands away from your nose,
mouth, eyes, and woundsespecially if you havent
    just washed your hands.
  • Be healthy! Get plenty of sleep, exercise
regularly, drink plenty of water, and eat
    nutritious food.

19
What else can I do?
  • To fight MRSA.
  • Stay home when you are sick and try to avoid
being close to people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, always cover your mouth and nose
with a clean tissue when you sneeze or cough.
Then, throw the tissue in the trash right away.
If you dont have a tissue, use your sleeve
    instead of your hands.

20
