Still early days

• 37 out of 45 trusts in NHS WM on ESR
• Still building experience of using the data
  warehouse
• Still relying on NHS staff census for
  comprehensive comparative and time series data

What we have used it for

• Replacing quarterly returns from trusts and PCTs
  (WID) reducing the burden
• Providing more up-to-date figures
• Calculating occupation-specific turnover rates
  for workforce supply model
• Use of additional information to supplement
  occupational codes area of work, staff group
• Assessing data quality

Further plans

• More detailed monitoring of workforce
  characteristics gender/ethnicity/age
• Provide more frequent reports on workforce trends
  than staff census
• Developing standard shared reports
• Monitoring skill mix, Xmas trees etc
• Source of recruitment and destination of leavers

The DW is different.

• Data in the Data Warehouse cant be amended
• Analysed by people who may be unfamiliar with the
  way you do things
• Used for purposes over which you have no control
• Can be used to draw wrong conclusions which
  affect your organisation

• Comparing Occupation Codes with other fields in
  ESR for medical and dental staff
• Job role, Area of work, Staff group, Occupation
  description
• reveals that over 300 have secret lives!
