3
Z-Linux - Why invest in the mainframe?
4
Z-Linux - The IBM Mainframe Today
  • Mainframes still serve the Worlds Top
    Enterprises
  • 95 of the Fortune 1000 enterprises use IMS
  • 25 of the worlds top 25 Banks, 23 of the top 25
US Retailers, and 9 out of 10 of the worlds

    customers
  • There are more than 950,000 CICS application
    programmers
  • 380 ISVs sell over 1060 Linux applications on
    System z

5
Z-Linux
Western Civilization runs on system Z
6
Z-Linux - Specialty engine MIPS growth

7
Why run Linux on the Z-series?
System z9

Linux
  • Reliable, stable, security-rich
  • Large selection of applications middleware and
tooling from IBM, ISVs and Open Source
  • Available from multiple distributors
  • Evolves rapidly to meet business challenges
  • Plentiful availability of skillsadministrators
    and developers
  • Legendary dependability
  • Designed for multiple diverse workloadsexecuting
    concurrently
  • Highly scalable up or out
  • Extremely security-rich
  • Advanced virtualization capabilities withthe
    z/VM operating system
  • The ability to add processing power quickly, when
    its needed
  • Benefit from established processes and
    disciplines
  • Proximity to data running on other operating
systems on the same System z

Data Centre in a box..
9
Z-Linux - where to from here?
  • New Z-9 Business Class processor acquired
  • 2 x Linux IFLs installed in new hardware,
  • Successful POC completed in 2006/07 - Oracle,
UDB, websphere portal, FTP, FP,Lotus Domino,
    Lotus Notes email
  • DCIS Intranet for portal production pilot
  • Z-Linux is now available as a hosting option
  • Need to adopt a new mainframe paradigm

10
ePASS2
  • Background.
  • SUN Microsystems contracted to deliver ePASS2 -
SIM SAM products replace ePASS 1.5 Domino app
  • Development delays - now scheduled for production
    roll-out March 2008.
  • Development complete by Xmas
  • UAT in Jan, training in Feb.
  • Easter 2008 (22 March) target go live date

11
ePASS2
  • Roll-out Easter 2008
  • Sun product will deliver like-for-like
    functionality
  • Communication and training plans in place
  • NTG will be engaging with service providers in
    the new year

12
ePASS2
  • Future direction
  • Integration of other service catalogues
    (messaging comms).
  • Expanding business system authentication and
    setting policy standards.
  • Role-based access to resources and services
  • Move personalised portals and sign on once in
    the morning

13
Enterprise Service Bus - ESB
  • ESB - What is it..??
  • Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is part of the
    Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) story.
  • There is no widely agreed upon definition of SOA
other than its literal translation. It is an
    architecture that relies on service-orientation
as its fundamental design principle. In an SOA
environment independent services can be accessed
without knowledge of their underlying platform
    implementation.

14
Enterprise Service Bus - ESB
  • IBM describe ESB as a comprehensive, flexible
and consistent approach to integration while also
reducing the complexity of the applications being
    integrated.
  • We just refer to it as the 'enabler'.
  • Most large government and commercial business are
looking at or currently implementing an ESB as
part of transforming their data from diverse
    sources into high value information.
  • DCS working with the Department of Justice to
    implement an ESB.

15
ESB - single interface, many sources
16
Enterprise Service Bus - ESB
  • Progress so far
  • Proof of technology completed with IBM, DCS,
    Fujitsu and DoJ
  • Procurement process has commenced.
  • DCS working with the DoJ to implement an ESB.
This will enable linking diverse systems
together, while improving the quality of
    information presented to clients
  • Opportunities exist for other agencies to get on
    board.

17
ESB - get on the bus...
18
Miscellaneous
  • Disaster recovery
  • Future of Chan Building
  • Expansion of VMWare infrastructure
  • Utility computing approach
