7
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)
How Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy works
A laser pulse creates a plasma. Spectroscopic
analysis as the plasma cools allows for the
identification of elements within the sample from
their unique spectral signatures.

Extremophiles
  • Exploring microbiology of deep-sea,
salt-saturated brine lakes, lacking oxygen, on
    the floor of the Mediterranean
  • Team obtained many new species
  • Microbes are being investigated for their
    potential applications, e.g. enzymes for
    synthesising new drugs

  • Essex scientists involved in discovery of
    microbial life in extreme environments
  • Salt-saturated brine lakes occur more than 3km
below the surface of the Mediterranean
  • Diverse microbial communities have been found in
    these brine lakes
  • Many unique microbes have been identified
