23Additives
- Adding flavor to tobacco has been a common
practice, most flavorants were incorporated after
1970 - Additives are used to
- provide higher levels of nicotine
- enhance the taste of smoke making
- cigarettes more palatable
- mask the smell and visibility of side-stream
- smoke
- Additives are screened for their toxicity but no
assessment is required on the impact additives
have on smoking behavior or addictive properties
