Taking Notes in Class
  • Get Ready to Take Notes (Before Class)
  • Review your notes from yesterday
  • Complete all assigned reading before class
  • .
  • Bring notetaking material to class. This
includes pencils, paper, and your folder.

3
Take Notes During Class
  • Keep your ears focused on what the teacher says.
Listen for signal statements such asThis is
    important. or Remember that
  • Include all information from the board or
    overhead
  • If the teacher repeats it, it is worth writing
    down.
  • Write quickly and abbreviate familiar words
  • Ex. And (), Percent () with (w/) without
    (w/o)
  • Put a ? Next to all items the teacher goes over
that you dont understand. Go back to her and
ask this later. . Put teacher words into your
    own words.

4
Rewrite Notes After Class
  • Rewrite your notes and change all short sentences
and abbreviations for the correct information
  • Answer all the ?s you had
  • Add the information from the textbook that you
    read
  • Check with other students to make sure your notes
    match theirs.

5
Making Flashcards
  • When studying for a test, using flashcards can
help you retain things like vocabulary words and
    facts and figures.
  • Use index cards for the flash cards
  • Put the fact or term on one side and the answer
    on the back
  • This is one way to study by yourself

6
Use Acronyms to Remember Information
  • The five Great Lakes are HOMES Huron, Ontario,
    Michigan, Erie, and Superior
  • Take the first letter of each term and make up a
    sentence that you will remember
  • Ex. KIDS HAVE DROPPED OVER DEAD CONVERTING
METRIC-Kilo, Hecto, Deka, base, Deci, centi, and
    mili,

7
Acronyms
  • Write the facts you need to remember
  • Underline the first letter of each fact. If
there is more than one word in a fact, underline
the first letter of only the first word in the
    fact.
  • Arrange the underlined letters to form an acronym
that is a real word or a nonsense word you can
    pronounce (ROYGBIV)

8
Test Taking
  • To keep from getting test anxiety.STUDY

9
Test Taking-DETER
  • D Directions-
  • Read the directions carefully
  • Ask your teacher if there is anything about the
    test you dont understand
  • You must follow the directions to show what you
    know
  • Only by following the directions can you get a
    good grade on a test

10
EExamine
  • Look at the whole test before starting
  • Start with the easiest and work your way to the
    hardest.
  • This way you can spend more time on the more
    difficult items.

11
TTime
  • Assess how much time you are allotted. Decide
how much time you will spend per question. Ex.
If you have 50 questions and one hour to take it,
you have more than a minute per question Include
    time to review
  • Spend more time on problems that are worth more
    points.
  • Dont spend too long on one question. Move on to
another question and come back to it if you have
    time.

12
EEasiest
  • Answer the easiest questions first
  • If you get to a difficult question, move
onanswer the ones you know first and then come
back to the more difficult ones.

13
RReview
  • If you planned accurately, you will have time to
reviewmake sure you answered as accurately and
    complete as you could.
  • Also make sure to review the test directions to
be certain you have answered ALL the items
    required.

14
Remember.
  • You do not get extra points for finishing first.
  • THE FIRST ONE DONE ISNT ALWAYS THE ONE WHO DOES
    THE BEST!!!

15
Strategies for Reading Textbooks-SQRW
  • SSurvey-Read the title, look at the pictures,
and think about what you already know about the
    subject.
  • Get a general overview about the chapter-What you
    knowwhat you want to know

16
QQuestion
  • Give yourself a purpose while readingWho?What?Whe
    n?Where?How?
  • Change the title of each heading to form a
question-Uses of Electricity to What are some
    uses of electricity?
  • If the heading is stated in a question, use that
    question.
  • Do not form questions for an introduction,
    summary, or conclusion
  • Answer all questions at the end of a section

17
R-Read
  • Read to answer the questions you just asked
  • Stay focused and flexible so you can gather as
much information as you need to answer each
    question

18
W-Write
  • Write an answer to each question you asked
  • Write the answers to the end section questions
  • Write any important words or terms in your
notes-Always use your words instead of textbook
    terms
  • Always reread your notes

19
One Key Rule
  • NEVER WAIT UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE TO STUDY FOR A
    TEST
  • Study a little each night and the task will not
    seem so great.

20
The RQWQCQ Strategy for Solving Math Word Problems
  • R-Read
  • Q-Question
  • W-Write
  • Q-Question
  • C-Compute
  • Q-Question

21
  • R-Read- Read the entire problem to learn what it
is about. You may find it helpful to read the
problem out loud, form a picture of the problem
in your mind, or draw a picture of the problem.

22
  • Q-Question-Find the question to be answered in
the problem. Often the question is stated
directly. When it is not stated, you will have
to identify the question to be answered.

23
  • W-Write Write the facts you need to answer the
question. It is helpful to cross out any facts
presented in the problem that are not needed to
answer the problem. Sometimes, all the facts
presented in the problem are needed to answer the
    question.
  • C-Compute Set up the problem on paper and do
the computations. Check your computations for
accuracy and make any needed corrections. Once
you have done this, circle your answer.

24
  • Q-Question Look at your answer and ask
yourself Is my answer possible? You may find
that your answer is not possible because it does
not fit with the facts presented in the problem.
When this happens, go back through the steps of
