Background Why are there new Phys. Ed. courses
in Grade 11 12?
- The Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures Task Force
Report was released in June 2005, which contained
47 recommendations. The Manitoba Government has
pledged to implement all 47 of its
recommendations. - Of these 47 recommendations, eight involve the
school system in the areas of nutrition in
schools, and physical activity in schools. This
included new Phys. Ed. courses in Grade 11 and
12.

Guiding Principles of the Grade 11 12 Phys. Ed.
courses
- The course is designed to help youth take greater
ownership of their own physical fitness, to
encourage them to seek out activities that
interest them, and to engage in active lifestyles
into their futures. - Guiding Principles
- align with K-12 PE/HE Framework
- encourage youth to take more ownership
- involve parent/community
- provide flexibility for schools with the delivery
model - provide variety and choice of activities for
students - provide choice of delivery for students (e.g.
of - IN/OUT time topic or interest areas)
- Focus on health and personal planning

When do the Phys. Ed. courses begin?
- All students entering Grade 12 in the 2008-09
school year will be required to take the Grade 12
Phys. Ed. course (exceptions may be if student is
on an individualized program or has an equivalent
out-of-province course). - All students entering Grade 11 in the 2008-09
school year will be required to take the Grade 11
Phys. Ed. course and the Grade 12 Phys. Ed course
in the following year (exceptions may be if
student is on an individualized program or has an
equivalent out-of-province course). - Students may take both courses in one year
although it is not recommended as the purpose of
the course is to instill lifelong active habits.

Are the new Phys. Ed. courses required to
graduate?
- All students entering Grade 12 in the 2008-09
school year will be required to take the Grade 12
Phys. Ed. course as part of the graduation
requirements and will graduate with a minimum 29
credits(exceptions may be if student is on an
individualized program or has an equivalent
out-of-province course). - All students entering Grade 11 in the 2008-09
school year will be required to take the Grade 11
12 Phys. Ed. courses as part of the graduation
requirements and will graduate with a minimum 30
credits(exceptions may be if student is on an
individualized program or has an equivalent
out-of-province course). - Students graduating in 2010 or later in Manitoba
will need a minimum of 30 credits including Grade
11 12 Phys. Ed. as part of their required
courses.

How are the new Grade 11 and 12 Phys. Ed. courses
setup?
- Schools may choose different methods of
implementation - Implementation model - 100, 75/25, 50/50,
25/75

How are the courses evaluated?
- As part of earning a credit, students will be
required to - submit a Personal Fitness Portfolio containing
- elements such as
- 1. Parent Declaration and Consent Form
- 2. Fitness Plan This includes a list of
activities that - the student plans to take part in. With
each - activity there will be a list of risk
factors and a - safety plan associated with each.
- 3. Journal which allows for logging of time and
- parental endorsement/comments.
- Students will be graded for completion of the
course - with a Complete or Incomplete designation. The
- Complete/Incomplete will not affect a students
grade - point average.
- There is no percentage mark in Grade 11 12
Phys. Ed. It is only reported as Complete or
Incomplete.

Role of Schools and School Division
- Schools and school divisions are required to
- Develop a risk management policy related to the
OUT-of- - Class physical activity practicum.
- Provide risk management measures and safety
information. -
- Provide a teacher and parent/guardian sign-off
process that - aligns with government policy.

Role of Students
- Must develop a physical activity plan that meets
the criteria - set out by their teacher.
- Identify the inherent risks and how they plan to
address - these risks. i.e. Wear a helmet when
skateboarding. - Share the proposed plan with their teacher and
then - parent(s). When sharing with parent(s),
students will also - be able to identify where they can get further
safety - information.
- Once the students plan has been
accepted/approved by - appropriate parties, the student will
implement and log the - activity time as they participate.

Role of Parents
- Review the students plan, exercise discretion
and be aware - of the safety issues of the activities chosen.
- Assume responsibility for safety and supervision
of the - chosen activities.
- Approve the students physical activity plan by
signing the - Parent Declaration and Consent form.
- Monitor the students progress and complete the
appropriate - forms.

Safety Type of Activities Out-of-Class
Activities 2 Categories
- Schoolbased activities (e.g., sports teams,
- intramurals and clubs) Prairie Spirit School
Division, local - schools and teaching staff are responsible
for safety - guidelines. Reminder these activities must
be part of a students - personal fitness plan and require both
teacher and parent - endorsement.
- Non-school based activities (e.g., community
- sports teams, dance classes at local studio,
working out at - home) parents (student under 18) and students
are - responsible for safety guidelines. Reminder
these - activities must be part of a students
personal fitness plan - and require both teacher and parent
endorsement.

Parental Declaration and Consent Form
- The parents (or student if over 18) must sign a
parent - declaration and consent form before the
activity begins. - By signing the consent form, the parent (or
student - over 18) takes full responsibility for
ensuring a safe - environment for out of school activities.
- Schools will consider the risk factor in the
activities - and may choose not to accept certain
activities - because of the risk factor.
