How We Find Out
  • We Train
  • We Watch
  • We Record
  • We Ask
  • Bi-annually We Collate Discuss
  • Our Development Cycle is built on this
  • We build on successes - users like more good
    stuff
  • We delete pet ideas - they dont miss stuff
    that they dont use

16
What have we Learned
  • Finding Stuff is no longer enough
  • Doing Things with Stuff Counts
  • Its Theirs not Ours
  • They are a group - engage the group
  • Watch your specialist language
  • Listen to the User
  • Synthesise what you are told
  • Focus groups talk about they already know
  • Your good ideas are bad ideas if a user cant
    grasp quickly

17
What have we Learned 2
  • Do simple things extraordinarily well
  • Scalability Sustainability are very important
  • Wonderful design can conceal not reveal
  • Your site must grow and flex
  • Face up to Endless Beta
  • Your site does not have a 10/5/1 year life
  • Think about building Tools that
  • Are grasped instantly
  • Pace the user with one focus at a time
  • Meet a need just in time
  • Not Photoshop but iPhoto

18
What have we Learned 3
  • Change and progression are important
  • Build - in parts - and tutor your audience
  • Captivating and Motivating is about answering
needs and doing things delightfully time and
    again
  • Service values matter - work for your user
  • A fabulous Flash Experience can die on the vine
  • A Great tool will be returned to time and again
  • Dont despair when some users cant find Help,
Order Image or 101 obvious things. Some people
think you need an aerial for the internet.
