Fine Arts
  • 4Year Planning for Success

2
Purpose
  • To ensure every student graduates on the
    recommended plan.
  • To enable students to continue involvement in the
fine arts for all 4 years of high school.
  • To make a plan that will enable you to meet your
    future goals.

3
Why 4 Years of Fine Arts?
  • Fine Arts provide an emotional, social, and
    artistic outlet.
  • Skills learned in Fine Art classes are stacked
the longer you are enrolled, the more skills you
    will develop.
  • There are many benefits of continual enrollment
    in Fine Arts courses.

4
Here are a few interesting facts, concerning
Fine Arts Education.
5
Fine Art Research
  • Research supports a high correlation between fine
art experience and higher scores on the SAT.
  • Additional research supports slightly higher IQ
scores as well as increased brain size in fine
    arts students.

6
Continued.
  • Students with fine arts experience average 82
points higher on the SAT than those without fine
    arts.
  • Students with 4 or more years of Fine Arts
average 89 points higher on the SAT than those
with .5 semester or no Fine Art experience.
  • Texas All State members average almost 200 SAT
points higher than the national average.

7
Where Does the Data come from?
  • Data has been collected from the College Board,
makers of the SAT, as well as independent
    researchers.
  • Gifted and Talented research also supports this
    data.

8
Colleges are looking for students with more than
just high grades!!
  • Your other activities play a big part in college
    acceptance.

9
Colleges want..
  • Students that are emotionally and mentally
    mature.
  • Students with a wide range of experiences
  • Students that can think outside of the box.
  • Students that are committed to what they begin.

10
These are all skills and traits that are
supported by a 4 year Fine Art Education.
  • Fine Art involvement is also a big plus on your
    college resume

Did You Know?Music majors are the most likely
group of college grads to be admitted to medical
school. Physician and biologist Lewis Thomas
studied the undergraduate majors of medical
school applicants. He found that 66 percent of
music majors who applied to med school were
admitted, the highest percentage of any group.
For comparison, (44 percent) of biochemistry
majors were admitted. Also, a study of 7,500
university students revealed that music majors
scored the highest reading scores among all
majors including English, biology, chemistry and
math.Sources "The Comparative Academic
Abilities of Students in Education and in Other
Areas of a Multi-focus University," Peter H.

executives agree that arts education programs can
help repair weaknesses in American education and
better prepare workers for the 21st
century."Source "The Changing Workplace is
Changing Our View of Education," Business Week,

Did You Know?Data from the National Educational
Longitudinal Study of 1988 showed that music
participants received more academic honors and
awards than non-music students, and that the
percentage of music participants receiving As,
As/Bs, and Bs was higher than the percentage of
non-participants receiving those grades.Source

Graduation Requirements
16
All students must have
  • 4 credits of English
  • 4 credits of Math
  • 4 credits of Science
  • 4 credits of Social Studies
  • .5 credit of Health
  • .5 credit of Communications
  • 1 credit of Technology
  • 1.5 credits of P.E.
  • 1 credit of Fine Arts
  • 2-3 Credits of the same Foreign Language
  • 2.5-3.5 credits of Academic Electives

17
26 Credits Total
  • With a seven period day, over the course of four
years, 28 credits are possible without other
sources such as summer school, on-line courses,
    and correspondence course.

18
4 years of Fine Arts is Possible!!!!
  • You must have one year.
  • You have 2.5-3.5 electives. These can be Fine
    Arts courses.
  • There are still 2 Extra classes. Remember you
will take 28 credits, and need only 26 for
    graduation.

19
This plan allows for 1.5-2.5 credits of
additional electives.
20
What does it all mean?
  • As you build your 4-year plan, treat the fine
arts as you would any of the core subjects.
Build them in first, and work additional
    requirements around them.

21
A quick word about the core subjects
  • You will have to decide on what level CP, Pre-AP
    or AP.
  • Take the highest level of courses you think you
can handle- more advanced courses carry a higher
    GPA weight.
  • Advanced level sciences may require a separate
lab course, so it would take 2 spots in your
    schedule.

22
Fine Art 4-Year Plan
23
PE Waiver
  • Band and Dance students will automatically
receive a PE waiver. (Must do a minimum of 3
    years of the same waiver)
  • Others Fine Arts students may consider Off Campus
PE or certain other wavier courses

24
PE Waived Courses
  • Some may be double blocked. Check in the
    Blueprint to make sure.
  • You can only receive .5 credit of PE each
semester, even if the class is double blocked.
  • If you have only 1 credit of waivers or
equivalents, the third semester of PE must be
    Foundations.

25
PE Waiver Courses
  • Building Trades
  • Cosmetology
  • Athletics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Early Childhood
  • Ready Set Teach
  • PE in summer school
  • Health Science
  • Work Release

26
Fine Art 4-Year Plan with PE Waivers
  • This allows 1.5 more electives

27
Options for Additional Electives
  • Health may be taken as an on-line course, or
through summer school. Also Health Science
    waives health.
  • BCIS,Communication Applications and some PE
courses may be taken through summer school.
  • Many ISDs allows 2 credits to be taken for
    acceleration, though correspondence and on-line
courses. Summer school does not count toward
    these 2 credits.

28
Fine Art 4-Year Plan with additional Elective
Options
29
5-6 elective choices
  • If PE, BCIS, Health and Communication
Applications are taken through other means, you
    have 5-6 additional elective choices.
  • This means you can do Fine Arts for 4 years and
    another program.
  • This also leaves room for additional advanced
    classes.

30
More Good News!!!!!
  • We are looking for even more on-line course
offerings as well as certain other waivers,
making it even easier to stay involved in the
    Fine Arts

31
Questions?
32
Remember, plan ahead!!There are many options
that will allow you to continue in 4 years of
Fine Art participation.
