Photo Essay Factor leading to Hiroshima Bombing

  • Hitler promises to return Germany to world
power and to take back land lost by the Treaty Of
Versailles. The Treaty Of Versailles was put in
order on June 28th 1919 after the first world
war. It was put in place for the obvious reason
of the amount of damage that Germany had caused
for starting the war. The idea was to put limits
on Germanys power and to make sure that events
that took place in world war one did not arise
    again.
  • Hitler's first steps were to strengthen the
army and the air force. He felt this would make
    the nation indestructible.

3
  • Hitler demands that the Polish Corridor be
handed back to Germany. This territory was
awarded to Poland by the Treaty Of Versailles.
Poland refused Hitler's demands. On September 1st
1939, the German army marched over the boarders
of Poland. The people of Poland were unable to
defend theirs selves against the Germans new
style of war fare known as Lighting Warfare.
New strategies of surprise, force, boldness and
    close operation were used.

  • Canadian soldiers marching off to World War
Two. Canadians were shocked. Most were ready to
do what they could to help Britain. Canadas
entry into the war was not as automatic as it had
been in 1914. Canada was no longer a colony bound
to follow Britain into warfare. Canada had become
an independent nation. It was the first time that
it had declared was on its own behalf. Canada
    declared war on Germany.

5
  • After Hitler pushed into Poland, he then pushed
into Denmark, Norway, Belgium, and the
Netherlands. Then Hitler turned against France.
For the second time in 25 years, German troops
poured across the French Border. At the time of
the invasion, thousands of British troops rushed
across the English channel to help in the defense
of France. The Germans trapped them and they had
to retreat. He then raided Britain from the air.

6
  • The war continued to accelerate. The battle of
Britain, fought from August to October 1940,
marked the beginning of the long struggle against
the Nazi aggression in Europe which was to
    continue until 1945.

7
  • From 1939 to 1941, the United States remained
neutral. It was never directly involved in the
fighting. After the invasion and fall of France,
President Roosevelt urged that the country become
    a large producer of ammunition.
  • Hitler's ally in the east, Japan, had been
expanding. Japan had signed an agreement with
Germany in 1936 and become the axis powers. When
war began, Japan saw a chance to attack British
and other colonies in the Pacific. It was a big
mistake. On 7 December 1941, Japanese planes
came without warning and bombed an American naval
    base at Pearl harbor, Hawaii.

8
  • The attack at Pearl Harbor brought the United
States into the war. On December 8th 1941, the
United States declared war on Japan. Three days
later Germany and Italy, Japans allies, also
declared war on the United States. It was now
    truly a world war.

9
  • The Americans decided it was long enough. The
Americans had a powerful new weapon-the atomic
bomb. On August 6th 1945, an American bomber
appeared over the sky above Hiroshima. The
Americans had chosen Hiroshima because it was a
major port and an army port. In a few seconds the
city was covered by a cloud of dust and was
flattened within a 1 km diameter. Some say it was
the beginning of the end of the second world war.

10
Why did I choose this?
  • I decided to do a photo essay on the Hiroshima
bombing. I have wanted to learn more about it
sense a very long time and I figured this was a
good chance to do so. I also wanted to look
closely at the elements of world war two. To me
this bombing was one of the more interesting
things that I have learned in terms of history
because of what happened leading up to it.
