• Technology Community Development Internship
• 50 youth hired between the ages of 15-30
• 420 hour

• These Interns work in one of the 100 CAP sites in
  Vancouver and the Lower Mainland
• In Community Centres, Schools, and general
  Non-Profits.
• Youth placed with respect to education and skills

The Goal of the Internship

• To Support the CAP sites
• Providing training and assistance to support the
  public Internet and computer access.
• Helping the public access government forms,
  create resumes and cover letters, develop skills,
  and find employment.
• To Develop the Employability of the Interns
• Developing skills in general administration,
  meeting deadlines and interacting with clients
  and peers in the workplace.
• Skills in Communications and Technology are also
  developed.

Past Projects

• CAPYI Logo-Contest
• Interns were encouraged to develop CAPYI logos.
  
• The winning logo was silk-screened onto CAP
  Intern T-shirts.
• Photojournalism Project
• Held at Spartacus Books Gallery Exhibit in 2006.
• Mounted pictures and quotes of Intern Successes.
• Promoted CAP to the Community.
• CD-ROM Development
• The CD-ROM, Bridging the Gap, highlighted the
  success of the program and outlined future
  recommendations.
• It was sent the Minister of Industry in 2006.

• CAP Interns Attended Networking Meeting with
  youth organizations.
• Habitat Jam World Urban Forum
• Hosted and Facilitated discussion on Social and
  Environmental Issues, with people from all over
  the world, through Internet conferencing.
• Multicultural Health Conference
• Interns provided Tech Support at this
  community-networking event.
• YSIS Forum Youth Summit of the Information
  Society
• Facilitated Discussion on Youths role in an
  increasingly technology-dependent world.
  Submitted a report of our findings to Tunis,
  Tunisia for the UN conference in 2006.

Current Projects

• CAPYI Documentary
• Interns are currently creating a 5-minute short
  film on CAPYI
• It will be presented at the annual Summit on The
  Strategic Use of Information and Communication
  Technology for Communities February 22-24 2008.
• The Youth Portal
• Intern developed website
• Online hub for youth to access resources in
  education and career development links to
  Non-Profit opportunities and Arts and Culture
  Organizations of Vancouver and Health and Crisis
  links specifically for youth.

The Web Team

• The web team consists of two full-time Interns
• In the last 5 months, the team has worked on
  twenty community website projects and various
  logo development assignments.

The Tech Team

• The Tech Team is comprised of three Interns
• They act as support staff at the VCN computer lab
  alongside VCN volunteers assisting individual
  users and sustaining the email and web hosting
  programs that VCN hosts.
• Through the VCN email and phone help-line, the
  tech team support non-profit organizations in
  Vancouver and the Lower Mainland with tech
  knowledge and expertise.
• The tech Interns also refurbish old computers
  donated to VCN and allocate them to community
  members or organizations in need.
• They also help with Web Programming for VCN
  Projects

WebGUI Migration

• Many of the community websites hosted by VCN use
  the free, open source Content Management System
  WebGUI.
• During the last month, VCNs Tech Team has been
  working behind the scenes to upgrade 22 active
  sites from version 5 to version 7.
• The estimated completion date of the migrations
  and the subsequent contact and training is
  December 21st, 2007.

BC Societies Project

• In partnership with Volunteer BC, VCN has
  produced a website providing an online database
  containing core information on all BC Societies,
  designed to help develop and link registered
  nonprofits throughout BC.
• The listings include names, incorporation dates,
  addresses, and society numbers of the 23,000
  societies in BC.
• The BC Societies Project will be going live for
  public use on December 21st.

CAPYI Collaborations

• Fearless Media
• A multi-media project celebrating the arts and
  culture of the Downtown Eastside. The website
  will stream TV, Web, Radio, and Media from of the
  DTES community members.
• CAPYI will be coordinating the youth contingent
  and promoting CAP sites as Access Points in the
  DTES.
• Taking IT Global
• TIG is a Canadian developed online community that
  connects youth to find inspiration, access
  information, get involved, and take action in
  their local and global communities.
• VCN is hosting the Creating Local Connections
  Vancouver Representative. Bob has helped
  facilitate Intern meetings and is in the CAPYI
  office two afternoons per week.

Conclusion

• CAPYI has held a strong role in the many
  communities that make up Vancouver and the Lower
  Mainland it is vital in keeping these links
  alive.
