- Dear HSOC-201 students,
- The following tutorial will guide you in
retrieving an article from any academic journal
at the University of Calgary, an important skill
required throughout the research-intensive BHSc
program.
3Tutorial Goal
- To learn how to retrieve an article from any
journal held at the University of Calgary
4Article Required for Week 1
- Castro, A., Farmer, P. (2005). Understanding

6- Finding an Article While on Campus in the Library
7- From the desktop, double click on the Internet
browser of your choice (Internet Explorer or
Mozilla) - You should automatically be taken to the
University of Calgary library page (if not, then
enter http//library.ucalgary.ca/ in your
browsers search window)

9- In order to retrieve the required article, you
need to search for the journal (American Journal
of Public Health) in which the article is located - From the library home page (http//library.ucalga
ry.ca/), click on the Journals tab
10Click on the Journals tab
11Upon clicking on the Journals tab, the following
screen will appear
12- Remember whenever you are searching for a
particular article in the library catalogue, you
MUST ALWAYS search by JOURNAL TITLE, NOT the
article title!!!

- Searching for a Journal via Print Electronic
Journals through the Library Catalogue
14- In the Print Electronic Journals by title
section a. select Exact from the drop-down
menub. type in the journal name (American
Journal of Public Health) in the search boxc.
click on the Search tab
15Choose Exact from the drop-down menu
16- From the list of titles displayed

- Lets focus on Record 2. Under record 2, click
on the Details tab
17- Click on the Details tab in Record 2
18Type of User Journal Access
- Before you receive access to the journal, you
will need to choose the correct access path,
according to type of user - As University of Calgary students, please click
on the Internet Access University of Calgary

to gain access to the journal
20- Youll now be led to a screen that contains a
list of numerous providers that grant online
access (full-text) to articles within the
American Journal of Public Health. Clicking on
one of these links leads you directly into the
journal itself. - While there is no hard and fast rule regarding
which provider you should choose, I recommended
going with Academic Search Complete. - Click on the full text available from Academic
Search Complete 01/01/1975 to present link.

22- In the screen that appears next, you should
notice that the journal is sorted according to
year of issue, a key piece of information that
you must be aware of in order to retrieve the
article required.
23- Click on year of issue required (i.e. 2005)
24- Now, match up and click on the link that
corresponds to the volume/issue numbers needed
(i.e. volume 95, issue 1)
25- A complete listing of all of the articles
contained within a particular volume and issue
(95/1) will now be displayed. The listings are
organized numerically according to page number. -
- Scroll down the page until you reach record 12,
which is the article that you need to retrieve. -
- Download the full-text of this article by
clicking on the PDF Full Text link.
26Verify that the article you are seeking is the
right one then, click on the PDF Full Text Link
to download a copy
27- Congratulations, you have successfully retrieved
the article (dont forget to print it!)
Always click on the printer icon to print a PDF
article

- Searching for a Journal via E-Journals
29- Repeat the steps in slides 7-10.
- In the search box, choose Title equals from the
drop-down menu, and type in the name of the
journal (i.e. American Journal of Public Health).
Use the full name of the journal-do not
abbreviate! - Click on the Search tab.

for the American Journal of Public Health. - While there is no hard and fast rule suggesting

39- Finding an Article When Off Campus (at Home)
40- In order to retrieve this article from the
comforts of your home, you must - Have a U of C student card
- Register your student card for library privileges
at either the main MacKimmie Library or Health
Sciences Library circulation desks.
41- Using Your U of C Student Card
- Whenever you want to renew books, place holds, or
do research (including the retrieval of specific
articles), youll be asked to provide your U of C
User ID and PIN for authentication purposes.

43- Follow the steps exactly as they
appear in slides 7-21 (Option 1) or slides
7-12, 30-32 (Option 2). Up to this point,
retrieving articles while at the University or
from home is the same! - Once you click on the Academic Search Complete
provider, you will need to authenticate before
continuing! - Type in your U of C ID/Barcode and your
PIN/Password, and click on the Access Database
tab.

Please register with Library to activate full
library privileges! User ID first 9 digits
of bar code on back of card (take off last
digit) PIN number on front of card (take off
leading zeros)
45- 4. Follow the steps exactly as they
appear in slides 22-27 (Option 1) or
slides 33-38 (Option 2), and your task is
complete!

- Wireless Access on Campus
47- Wireless service is available across campus
- To access the Internet, you must log on to AirUC
via your eID sign-in (the same ID and password
you use to access My U of C)
48- For instructions on how to configure wireless
access on your laptop while on campus, please go

ess - Remember eID account and User ID are NOT the
same! (eIDID and password used to access My U
of C User IDbarcode number on the back of your
