What Does Green Resolution Mean?
  • COC Faculty understands the career needs and
interests of our students and the job demands in
    the near future
  • Faculty is in sync with students expressed
desire for a green campus (2/27/08-ASG Green
    Resolution Adoption)
  • We formally proclaim our support of the
    Principles of Sustainable Development Education
  • COC green curriculum is faculty driven

17
Furthermore
  • Department has control over what courses to be
    developed
  • Dont want to be behind the pack 10 years from
    now
  • COC adopted Green policiesawareness, building,
    energy savings
  • In principleadministration behind it, not a
    fringe issue.

18
Green ResolutionLets Break It Down
  • Principles of SD Education, according to the
    Presidents Council on SD (1996)
  • strong core academics
  • inter-relationships between disciplines
  • systems thinking
  • lifelong learning
  • hands-on experiential learning
  • community-based learning
  • technology
  • partnerships
  • family involvement
  • personal responsibility

19
Green ResolutionThe Three Whereas
  • The Faculty Senate seeks to encourage the
expansion of a Sustainability Curriculum by
  • first and foremost, strengthening our core
    curriculum
  • infusing concepts and principles of
sustainability into existing courses and programs
    when applicable
  • encouraging collaborations among faculty of
different disciplines in program and curriculum
    revision and design
  • fashioning student projects that foster systems
    thinking and experiential learning, and
  • creating new courses and programs that would meet
the demands of an increasingly environmentally
    oriented work force

20
The Second The Whereas
  • The Faculty Senate shall seek the support of
faculty and the administration in developing a
Sustainable Curriculum that would lead to a
certificate program and an Associate Degree in
Sustainable Development in the near future.

21
The Third Whereas
  • The Faculty Senate seeks to support and encourage
    student scholarships, intended to support
    ventures specifically focused on Environmental
    Studies and Sustainability Projects

22
Environmental Education
  • Environmental destruction is not the work of
ignorant people. Rather it is largely the result
of work by people with BAs, BSs, LLBs, MBAs, and
PhDs. More of the same kind of education will
only compound our problems. This is not an
argument for ignorance but rather a statement
that the worth of education must be measured
against the standards of decency and human
survival. It is not education but ecological
education of a certain kind, that will save us.

    Environment, and the Human Prospect
