The Muscular Systemch.17 s.2
Oh wow, Im so embarrassedeveryone can see me
naked!
2
Interesting Facts about muscles
  • Muscle A tissue composed of fibers capable of
    contracting to effect bodily movement
  • There are about 650 muscles in the human body.
  • Every person has a unique tongue print.
  • Hiccups are spasm of the diaphragm.

3
A Muscle is an organ that can relax and contract,
and provides the force to move your body parts.
  • 1. Voluntary muscles you are able to control
  • ex. Biceps, quadriceps, etc.
  • 2. Involuntary muscles you cannot control
  • ex. heart

4
There are three types of muscle tissue.
5
  • 1. Skeletal muscles move bones
  • a. Most common type of muscle
  • b. Tendons are thick bands of tissue that attach
    muscle to bones.
  • c. Voluntary muscles
  • d. Contract quickly and tire more easily
  • e. Look striped, or striated

6
  • 2. Smooth musclesfound in internal organs
  • a. Example Intestines
  • b. Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles.
  • c. Contract and relax slowly

7
  • 3. Cardiac muscle
  • a. found only in the heart
  • b. Cardiac muscle is striated, like skeletal
    muscle.

8
Muscle Structure
  • Composed of individual cells called fibers
  • Long and thread-like shape
  • Cells held together in bundles by connective
    tissue
  • Muscle covered by fascia is sheath of
    connective tissue
  • Supporting tissues merge to form tendon
  • Tendon attaches muscle to bone

9
You move because pairs of muscles work together.
  • 1. When one muscle of a pair contracts, the other
    relaxes.
  • 2. Muscles always pull.
  • 3. Over time, muscles can become larger or
smaller, depending on whether or not they are
    used.
  • 4. Blood carries energy-rich molecules to the
muscles so they can do their work.

10
DISCUSSION QUESTION
  • What are some actions of involuntary muscles?
  • Blood pumping through blood vessels, food moving
through the digestive system, the pumping of the
heart, or blinking are all activities caused by
    involuntary muscles.

Superficial Muscles, Posterior View
13
  • Toned muscles vs. bulky muscles
  • 2 ways to lift weights

14
Hold two books above your head for as long as you
can
  • How is the muscle able to do this? Where does it
    get its energy from?
  • When youre exercising, how does this process
    change?

15
Origins and Insertions
16
Muscle Action
  • Muscles work in pairs at joints to produce
    movement
  • Prime mover contraction
  • Antagonist relaxation
  • Point of origin muscle attachment point to
    stable part of skeleton
  • Point of insertion muscle attachment point to
    moving part of skeleton

17
Why do I need tendons?
  • Tendons attach my muscles to my bone helping my
    body move.
  • Feel your tendon right above your heel in
    the back of your leg.
  • This is the thickest tendon in your body.

Try This...
18
One way to keep my muscles strong
  • Eat foods from the meat group every day. They
are high in protein which helps to build strong
    muscles.
  • Name some foods that are high in protein.

19
Another way to keep strong muscles
  • Exercise every day.
  • What are some things you can do every day to help
    keep your muscular system healthy?
