What is group calendaring?Why does it fail?

• Software keep personal Calendars to help
  individuals manage their time commitments
• The software can scan the calendars of associates
  in order to schedule meeting times
• The user initiates a meeting request by simply
  adding the names of individuals with whom to
  meet.
• The software then schedules a meeting in a open
  time slot that is appropriate for all parties
  involved
• The software request confirmation from all parties

• From the surface group calendaring sounds like it
  would be welcomed by an office environment
• Ultimately it is REJECTED!
• Why?

Calendaring Disadvantages

• The initial problem with the software and
  hardware for this collaborative tool can number
  in the thousands of dollars for a moderately
  sized office. Again COST a disadvantage.
• Users initially stated the personal aspects of
  calling an associate to set up a meeting,
  laughing and socializing were lost. Again
  changing the office ENVIRONMENT

• It is up to the group member to enter all his/her
  appointments into the shared calendar which often
  takes more time than just to maintain a paper
  calendar. Forcing the user to do work from which
  they do not benefit. COSTing the company time and
  .

• According to an author, Grudin, whom has
  conducted much research on groupware, the
  software has failed because only management was
  involved in the design of the software.
• The managers and designers underestimated the
  complexity of the work environment and the
  software failed.
• The more users..the more time conflict..leaving
  the systems virtually useless

• Finally, the system would only work if all
  associated staff would use the system
• Some users non-responsive to change
• Sick
• What if one meeting leads to another, or runs
  over

  few disadvantages to groupware
• All advantages/disadvantages should be considered
  before implementation
