Title: The Brain
1The Brain

2Occipital Lobe
- The region in the back of the brain which
processes visual information. Not only is the
occipital lobe mainly responsible for visual
reception, it also contains areas that help in
the recognition of shapes and colors. Also called
visual cortex.

3Frontal Lobe
- The frontal lobe is located in the front of the
brain. It is used for problem solving,
organizing, planning, personality, and other
activities involved with knowing.

4Temporal Lobe
- The Temporal lobe controls some emotion, hearing
speech, and memory. It is located in the side of
the brain. Also called the auditory cortex.

5Parietal Lobe
- The parietal lobe is associated with movement,
orientation, recognition, and perception. It
also controls pain and touch sensation,
information processing, and speech.

6Cerebrum
- The Cerebrum is Latin for brain. It consists of
four lobes. The cerebral cortex is a thin layer
of neurons that lay on top of the brain.

8Cerebellum
- The cerebellum controls fine movement
coordination, muscle tone, and balance. It is
about the size of a fist, and also helps with
some language.

9Axons
- Axons take information away from the cell
bodies. Bundles of axons are called nerves or
nerve tracks. Axons are long threads.

10Dendrites
Dendrites are used in the brain to receive
messages and bring information to the cell body.
Dendrites branch out from the cell body, and are
compared to trees.

11Cell Body
The largest part of a cell, the cell body, holds
all of the general parts of a cell as well as the
nucleus, which is the control center. The nucleus
contains the cell's DNA, located in the
chromosomes.

12Synapse
Information from one neuron flows to another
neuron across a synapse. The synapse contains a
small gap separating neurons.

14Thalamus
- The thalamus functions are motor control,
receives auditory and visual sensory signals and
relays sensory signals to the cerebral cortex.

15Hypothalamus
- The Hypothalamus controls emotions and the
endocrine functions. It also regulates your
intake of food and water. The Hypothalamus is
your thermostat.

16Amygdala
- The Amygdala controls responses involved with
fear and some emotional responses. It also helps
with arousal.
http//www.sci.uidaho.edu/med532/amygdala.htm
17Pituitary Gland
- The pituitary is a small, pea-sized gland
located at the base of the brain. The pituitary
gland is in charge of hormones.

18Medulla Oblongata
- The medulla oblongata relays messages to and
from the brain. It is located at the bottom of
the brain, near the brainstem.

19Brain Stem
- The brain stem is responsible for arousal,
alertness, breathing, blood pressure, digestion,
and more. It is at the bottom of the brain.

20Things From the Movie
- Messages leave and reach brain through the
spinal cord. - The medulla controls breathing and blood.
- The cerebellum deals with balance.
- The central nervous system controls your brain.
- There are 9 billion nerves in your brain.

21Things From the Movie
- Reflexes are not controlled by your brain.
- Your hippocampus changes short term memory to
long term. - The right side of your brain is artistic, the
left side is logical. - Aspirin blocks pain transmitters.
