The Demographic Revolution.
  • The number of people aged 65 and over will

  • People aged 85 or over will increase by 86 over
    the same period. (Wanless. 2006).
  • There are more people over 65 now than there are
    teenagers. This is a first!

6
Wealth Distribution.
  • According to the Wanless report on care, some 45
of the current retired population of home-owners
have inadequate retirement income (Poole, 2006, p
    24).
  • Last winter over 25,000 people aged over 65 died
of cold related illnesses.(Age Concern 2008).
  • Nearly a fifth of pensioners are living in
    poverty. (Kings College London 2008).
  • UK has lowest state pension in the developed
    world. (Dr Ros Altman)

7
Wealth Distribution...
  • However...

before them at the same age.
  • Baby Boomers now hold 80 of the UK wealth.

    parents

10
Other Changes...
  • Poor pension provision or impact of current
economic climate on value of pension and
    investments.
  • Longer working lives. 61 of pensioners are
expected to carry on working past retirement
and not just because they want to. (Aegon report
    2008).
  • Increase in levels of debt in those aged 60 and
    over.
  • Expectations, attitudes....

Baby boomers with attitudes...
Grandad olescent!!!
12
Long Term Care... NO THANKS!
  • The use of Equity Release to pay for care in the
home is likely to increase as people would rather
stay in their own home and pay for help.

13
LTC and Domiciliary Care.
  • Long Term Care in the UK can cost as much as
75,000 per year, the average is 32,000 per
    year. (Saga April, 2007).
  • This stands at five times more than the average
annual cost of receiving care in the home, at
    6,846.
  • The average person has 11.6 hours home care per
week and the average price for a daytime hour of
    privately purchased care is 11.35.
  • 150,000 people purchase care at home privately
(UKHCA, Overview of UK Domiciliary care sector,
