Brief History of GSI Funding/Research
  • Winter/spring 2006- CROOS program was funded to
    conduct GSI research in OR
  • April 2007- SWFSC/FED received 170 K to conduct
    GSI in Monterey Bay sport fishery (equipment
    upgrade support of field and lab operations)
  • Interest and discussion continued through summer,
    e.g., Monterey Bay results presented at PFMC
    meeting
  • August 22, 2006- PSMFC meeting in Portland, OR
    with GSI presentations by Lawson (CROOS) and
    Garza (GSI). Decided to have a W/G meeting to
    develop coast-wide GSI proposal to evaluate the
    potential application of GSI to ocean salmon
    fishery management
  • September 14, 2006- PFMC meeting in Foster City,
    CA meeting with industry (IFR/ Zeke Grader).
    Discussed developing 3 yr GSI proposal (2.5-3M
    for GSI/ identified 150 vessels in CA and 100 in
    OR/ 10K per vessel to collect samples/ 6040
    split CAOR based on landings
  • September 18-22, 2006- W/G meeting in Portland to
    develop 3 yr GSI proposal (fisherman sample
    collection-11M/ industry administration-2M/ GSI
    science-5.2M/ integrative science and
    marketing-2.8M/ total-22.1M/ 6040 CAOR split)
  • January 2007- Lower cost versions of the proposal
    were requested by NMFS(10M and 5M). Included
    fisherman sample collection (50), GSI (25) and
    admin. and management analysis (25). Science
    objectives were inshore v offshore impacts on
    KRFC. N-S distribution of Chinook in SFO catch
    area and evaluate the potential for rapid turn
    around making real time management possible.
  • April 12, 2007- Received 400K from NMFS to
    conduct pilot GSI research/ 6040 split CAOR.
    Science objectives to sample the April Ft. Bragg
    opening for data on stock distribution, and May
    and July fishery to obtain data on N-S
    distribution of Chinook in SFO catch area. CA
    budget allocated for NMFS/GSI (123K), fishery
    samples (88K), CDFG/scale ages (16K) and
    miscellaneous (13K)
