18Berkeley Energy Connections (BEC)
BEC is an effort by BERC and the Environmental
Energy Technologies Division (EETD) of the
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The
program facilitates new collaborations between
those at UC-Berkeley and the Lab, providing new
opportunities for growth.
BEC has three lead program components Graduate
Student Outreach September 18th 430 to 630
pm More info soon! EETD and BERC will operate
an event designed to introduce students to work
conducted at the Lab. EETD invites students to
apply with the department, in search of new
talent to add to LBL.
Students Opening Ideas with LBL (SOIL) With
countless ideas in the minds of researchers at
LBL, SOIL will distribute the their concepts and
projects out to the skills and eagerness of
Berkeley students. After the software is
developed, researchers input projects into a
website, which also collects participating
student information. Upon finding matched skills
and time, the site invites the parties to start
communicating. Projects can be as simple or
complicated as one desires. The LBL EETD
Co-Sponsorship of the Energy Efficiency and
Conservation Idea Lab EETD has teamed up with
BERC to help host for and speaker at EEC Idea
Labs. With this partnership, new volunteers will
aid in running the Idea Lab once every two weeks,
often at the Lab. Participating students will
enjoy free food with an LBL employee or other
efficiency expert, who presents their work in an
informal yet focused environment. Students will
come having read relevant publications and are
prepared to contribute to a lively and thoughtful
discussion. Contact Nick Bojda, BEC Chair at
nickbojda_at_gmail.com.
19Cleantech to Market (C2M)
BERC founded the Cleantech to Market (C2M)
program, which will operated jointly by Haas
School of Business and LBNL as a for-credit
course in the future.
- C2M matches cross-disciplinary teams of graduate
students with scientists from the Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and the UC
Berkeley Office of Technology Licensing to
analyze and develop strategies to bridge the gap
between lab and market - 2008-2009 BERC partnered with the Technology
Transfer Department at LBNL to pilot the program - 2009-2010 Two co-directors will lead C2M as an
interdisciplinary graduate course
