HUMAN TRAFFICKING UNIT
  • BY Johanna L. Martinez

2
Unit Overview
  • In this unit students will be able to study
human trafficking current issue. Through this
unit students will investigate how hundreds of
thousands of people are being denied their basic
human rights and how this issue poses a serious
health risk. After having students expose to the
issue, they will go through a series of
activities that contain various content and
technology areas that will help them get a better
    understanding of human trafficking.
  • Age Range 4-6

3
Activity 1-History
  • Students will study the history during the slave
period of the United States. They will then use
this to compare it to the current issue of human
    trafficking.
  • Activity Procedure In this activity students
will form groups in which they will research and
choose a slave. For their research students can
use a variety of books as well as online sources.
Then they will use PowerPoint to create a
biography of their slave to share with their
classmates. In this project students will also
use a digital camera to take a picture of their
group and place it as part of their project.

  • Activity management For this activity students
will first go to the library to search for
information. Then they will spend the rest of the
time in the computer lab, searching online and
putting together their presentation. The learner
is expected to develop team collaboration and
    interpersonal skills while developing an
understanding in both history and technology.
The teachers role will be to guide the group in
    the appropriate direction.

Types of Technology Statement
  • There are three types of technology used in this
unit and they are the following
  • Technology as business resource- In activity two,
technology plays a major role in communicating
and managing the information of human trafficking
    statistics.
  • Technology as content delivery- This type of
technology was used in PowerPoint and iMovie
because their main focused was to present the
students understating to a wide variety of
    audience.
  • Technology as lesson support- Using the Writers
Companion software and the infection game online,
are methods in which technology is used to
support the lesson and at the same time making
    learning fun.

19
Engauge 21st Century Skills Statement
  • In this unit my students will be engage in
21st century learning skills because it will
require them to produce higher order reasoning
along with skills that will prepared them for
tomorrows world. Through the use of group work
in creating iMovie and PowerPoint, students
    become effective communicators because they
    develop interpersonal skills and team
collaboration. Students are also exposed to
digital-age literacy skills because basic skills
and information is presented within todays
    technological environment. Higher productivity
skill is also presented in this unit because
effective real world tools are used in the
    classroom to enhance their learning.

20
Adaptation Statement
  • Special need
  • -For those students who are partially blind I
will setup magnify-viewer in their computer
    screen.
  • -Those students with speech disabilities voice
synthesizer will be install in the computer.
  • -Mouse pedals will also be available for those
students who require this type of assistant.
  • Above grade level
  • For the group activities I will spread out
all of those students that are above their grade
level so they can be of greater benefit to the
group. On the individual activities I will try
to challenge these students by giving them
material that requires more critical thinking.
For example, in activity three I will require
them to select a higher level article.
  • Below grade level
  • Those students that are below their grade
level I will lower the guidelines for the
individual activities by letting them choose
options that I have selected. For example I will
guide them to what article they can choose. I
will also be able to give them extra assistant
after class to make sure they are keeping up with
    the assignments.

21
Impact of Technology Statement
  • The activities in this unit do not necessary
required the technology, but without it, it is
less effective. The technology supports the
lesson activities making learning fun and
challenging, while preparing them with skills for
the future. If technology would not be available
I will instruct each activity to be done the old
fashion way. For example, for activity one,
students will create poster for presenting their
slaves. In activity three students will write
their essays with paper and pen, while as a class
we brainstorm ideas. In low technology
circumstances I would try to create more group
work and limit the amount of time the computer is
used. I would also make students take turns in
using the computer. My high technology wishes
would be for every student to have a computer
available. I would also like for us to have a
set of camcorders, Macintosh computers and
    various educational software.
