Touch Input Devices

• Keyboard This is the most commonly used method
  of entering data into a computer.
• Mouse It is a pointing devise which allows the
  operator to move a pointer on the screen.

• Concept Keyboard This allows the operator to
  enter pre-programmed information at the press of
  one button.

Magnetic Input Devices

• Magnetic Strips These are narrow strips of
  magnetic material usually found at the back of
  plastic debit and credit cards.
• Smart Cards These are similar to magnetic
  strips but they also contain a tiny
  microprocessor chip which more data can be stored.

Light Input Devices

• Optical Mark Readers They detect marks made on
  paper, usually by a soft leaded pencil when the
  page is scanned by an infra-red light.
• Barcode Reader Numbers are converted by
  computer into the product description and price.

• Scanners Enables a computer to read both texts
  and pictures. A light is passed over an image or
  page of text.
• Digital Cameras A picture taken with this is
  stored on a removable chip rather than film.

• Digital Video Allows digital camcorders to
  download and manipulate a video image, using a
  fire wire interface.

• Voice recognition Allows the user to input data
  to a computer using their own voice which is then
  converted directly into text via word processor.
• Musical Instrument Digital Interface This is
  developed to link musical keyboards to computers
  so the music can be stored digitally on a hard
  drive.
