Title: Active English

1
Active English
  • English for native English speaking children and
    fluent speakers

2
Active English
  • The overall objective of Active English is to
improve your childs English skills through a fun
    and creative environment.

3
What we do
  • We run 8 week English courses on a Saturday
afternoon consisting of a one hour English
language class plus an activity (drama,
photography, jazz dance, singing, yoga, sport,
art and craft) in English, also lasting one hour.
  • Active English provides the opportunity for
native English speaking children and fluent
speakers to produce written work (stories, book
reviews, poetry..) in their mother tongue. We
also help improve listening, reading and speaking
    skills.

4
What we do
  • The English language class is theme based
and focuses on developing English language
    skills writing, speaking, reading, listening.
Children are given the opportunity to write
    stories, study/write/recite poetry, write book
    reviews/study different genres of writing.
  • During the second hour, children are given
the opportunity to participate in a variety of
    creative/sports activities in English. The
purpose of this second session is to reinforce
the childrens English skills whilst obtaining a
new skill (be it acting, photography or other)
    and to have some fun!

5
What we do
  • The age we are primarily catering for is 8-11
year olds. As Active English expands so too will
the age range, with the eventual aim of including
all ages between 6-16 yrs. Therefore, those
people interested whose children are not in the
initial age bracket are welcome to contact us to
join a waiting list for future courses.

6
How we do it!
  • Active English offers classes on a Saturday
between 16.30 -18.30 in the winter months and
12.00 14.00 in the summer months (to allow for
trips to the park/beach etc). We believe these
times are most conducive to learning as it is not
after a long day at school when the children are
    tired
  • The time is intended to be family friendly by
fitting in around meal times (and theres no
early morning start on a Saturday!). The length
of the session also gives parents a long enough
break to get things/jobs done. Or they may choose
to take advantage of one of our adult courses on
    offer eg piano/yoga/Spanish.

7
How we do it!
  • Each course runs for eight weeks. At the end of
each course we will have a presentation of the
childrens work. This will include some written
work from the first session and either a show,
demonstration or display from the second session.
  • The activities on offer in the second session
will rotate every eight weeks and children only
need to enrol on an eight week basis.
  • As the club expands we will offer more activities
concurrently - giving families a wider choice.

8
Who we are
  • We are a team of professionals dedicated to the
    education of children.
  • All teachers are experts in their field with many
    years experience.

9
ENGLISH
  • The class will explore childrens literature
and poetry. The children will have the
opportunity to create and recite their own
stories and poems, and to write reviews of the
works they have read. We aim to develop reading
and writing skills and to encourage creativity,
    self-expression and originality. The childrens
work will be displayed at the end of each 8 week
    course.
  • Pippa Meikle and Libby Barnes are fully qualified
    and experienced English teachers.

Drama and English
  •   The Drama class at Active English will
consist of a variety of drama games, movement
with music, improvisation and an end of term
project, to show to parents and friends. The

Photography
  • Using digital cameras provided by Barcelona
Photographer and through the process of building
and using a pinhole camera, we aim to give a
basic understanding of photography. The course
encourages creativity and originality which is
demonstrated in an end of course presentation.
  • Daniel Jack Eves is a professional photographer
and a qualified primary school teacher from Great

12
Yoga
  • Yoga for children is dynamic, intense and
challenging. It directs their natural energy and
enthusiasm in a physical activity that is
    non-competitive. Yoga enhances will-power,
    sensitivity, balance, flexibility, strength,
coordination and provides children with a means
to learn about themselves through a wide range of
bodily movements. In children as in adults it
helps us to deal with the changes and challenges
    of living.
  • Melanie Barber is a qualified Iyengar Yoga
    teacher.

13
Dance
  • The classes will be aimed specifically
    at developing self expression, rhythm,
flexibility and technical ability at the same
time as building confidence and physical
awareness. The course will culminate with a short
performance, giving the children a greater sense
of achievement, motivation and self satisfaction.
  • Nikki Roberts, a British born professional dancer
and instructor, will run the Jazz Dance workshop.

14
Singing/music
  • The classes at Active English will consist of
games and songs with a focus on breathing and
basic vocal techniques and awareness. We aim to
build confidence, enjoy singing and prepare for a
    final performance.
  • Sarah Davison is a qualified singer/musician with
over 20 years teaching and performing experience.
