Mission
  • To promote student involvement with UC faculty,
    staff and administration in collaboration with
    the UC Office of the President and the UC Board
    of Regents, to implement environmentally sound
    practices in the UC system. To unite and empower
    students throughout the state with the common
    goal of assuring a sustainable future for
    California and the world.

Brief History
  • 2002 Green Peace, UC Go Solar campaign evolved
    into a UC system-wide green building and
    renewable energy policy initiative.
  • 2003 Green building and and renewable energy
    mandate was accepted by the UC Board of Regents.
  • USGBC LEED certification or equivalent
  • 10 renewable grid purchase by 2004,
  • 20 renewable grid purchase by 2017 and 10MW
    energy produced on on site

ESLPEducation for Sustainable Living Program
  • ESLP is the educational, research, and outreach
    component of CSSC.

    C. as they truly are interconnected and
    interdependent.
  • Action Research Teams (ART)
  • Partner UC students, staff, faculty,
    administration, and community members in action
    research projects.
  • Accreditation/compensation, accountability, and
    legitimacy

  • Students develop transferable organizational,
    professional, and leadership skills.

  • 1999 USGBC LEED established
  • 2003 UC System wide LEED mandate
  • UCSB SEED Silver
  • Arnolds executive order mandates all state
    funded buildings in CA to be built LEED Silver
  • UCSB Action Research Team LEED certifying
    students
  • Chancellors advisory Committees at UC Berkeley,
    SB, SC, Irvine, SD Davis in the works

Move UC
  • The Move UC Resolution "Asks that the University
    of California, Board of Regents pass a
    comprehensive sustainable transportation policy
    that shall include, but not be limited to the
    following provisions
  • That the University of California reduce the
    total fossil fuel consumption of its fleets by
    50 in the next ten years. And that the
    University work towards the goal of achieving a
    climate neutral (zero fossil fuel consumption)
    fleet by 2030.
  • That the University of California reduce the
    number of staff, faculty and students commuting
    in single occupancy vehicles by 25 in the next
    ten years by supporting and promoting alternative
    transportation such as bicycling, walking,
    carpooling and public transportation. And that
    the University work towards a 50 reduction in
    single occupancy commuting by 2025.

Conclusions
  • CSSC bridges academia and activism, partnering UC
    students, staff, faculty, and administration to
    leverage sustainable principles and policies on
    UCOP and UC Regents.
  • CSSC is the most established and proven
    ecological student organization in California.
  • CSSC is evolving exponentially, comprehensively,
    and deeply within and throughout University of
    California communities.
  • CSSC can serve as an organizational,
    institutional, and political conduit to the ideas
    and inspirations synergized at this summit.
