Epidemiologic Situation
  • No new cases reported this week and NO isolates
    pending ITD
  • The number of infected States are still 18
    States.
  • The total confirmed polio cases since the start
    of the outbreak is 151
  • 139 in north and 12 in south Sudan
  • 148 P1 cases and 3 P3 cases
  • The confirmed cases with onset in 2005 is 24
    cases.
  • North 20 P1 cases from
  • Kassala (5), Blue Nile (2), Bahr El Gabal (1),
    Gedarif (4) White Nile (1), Sennar (2), Unity (2)
    and Upper Nile(1), Khartoum (1), West Kordofan
    (1)
  • South 4 P1 cases from
  • Upper Nile (Unity)
  • In early 2005, the virus circulation seemed to be
    concentrated in upper Nile region in South Sudan
    and in the eastern areas of the country
    (bordering Eritrea and Ethiopia). Also one case
    appeared in each of Khartoum and West Kordofan in
    the fourth week of March

Important Recent Activities
  • ICC meeting held on 3rd May under the
    chairmanship of H.E. the Federal Minister of
    Health with participation of WHO, UNICEF, Rotary
    Reps and other members
  • The ICC stresses the need to
  • Sustain high quality in the coming May campaign
    and give more attention to IDPs and returnees.
  • Improve routine immunization coverage.
  • H.E. Minister of Health indicated that he will
    arrange a meeting with finance Dept to seek
    enough funds for routine immunization.
  • H.E. Minister of health acknowledged support of
    the partners and reiterated the commitment of the
    Sudan government to to interrupt the polio virus
    transmission in Sudan.
  • The next meeting will be held in Jun 2005.

Important Recent/Planned Activities
  • The Budget for May NIDs has been finalized and
    sent the to WHO/EMRO
  • April NIDs review meeting will be held 7-9 may
    with participation of federal EPI unit, The State
    DGs health and Operation officers , WHO STCs and
    NMOs
  • On May 10 a meeting will be held with WHO STCs
    and NMOs to discuss the sustainability of quality
    of NIDs, coordination with other sectors
    especially NGOs, as well as preparation for the
    coming AFP surveillance review in Jun 2005
