- The lion is a powerful animal, so its slaying at
the hands of Ashurbanipal is meant to show him as
a courageous and powerful leader

- Notice how Darius and Xerses are drawn much
larger than their visitors. Also, the visitor
facing Darius has his hand in front of his mouth,
so as to not contaminate the air that Darius and
Xerses breathe. The relief demonstrates the power
of Darius and Xerses hold, and also the awe they
inspire from their visitors.

- Darius built the famous Persian temple at
Persepolis (Iran) as an administrative capital.

Mycenea, the capitol of the (ancient Greek)

14 - The Mask of Agamemnon was discovered by amateur
archeologist Henrich Schliemann. Schliemann used
Homers stories to lead him to the discovery of
both Troy and Mycenea. The beautiful gold mask
Schlieman discovered is not conclusively that of
Agamemnon, but Schliemann believes that it is.

- Knossos temple on the island of Crete was the
administrative and cultural center of Minoan
civlization.

are the most striking artistic features of the
temples interior. Here, a young man soars
acrobatically over a charging bull. Central to
Minoan culture was the Minotaur, a ferocious
animal half-bull human, half-human.

temples interior. The Minoans, a seafaring
people, undoubtedly saw dolphins in their voyages.

- The Acropolis (city upon a hill) is home to
Athens most famous architectural building, the
Parthenon, and was the site of the agora
(marketplace) as well as several temples. During
the classical era of Pericles in the fifth
century BCE it represented Greek society in an
idealistic way.

- The Parthenon (the Temple of Athena) is the most
famous surviving building of Ancient Greece and
one of the most famous buildings in the world. It
has stood atop the Acropolis of Athens for nearly
2,500 years. It was built to give thanks to
Athena, the city's protecting goddess, for the
salvation of Athens and Greece in the Persian
Wars. Inside the temple once stood a 40-foot
statue of Athena.

- The Erechtheion is a temple located on the
Acropolis. Its most noticeable feature is the
famous "porch of the maidens", with six draped
female figures as supporting columns.

Greece for her ability to predict the future.
This oracle exerted considerable influence across
the country, and was consulted before all major

- Venus de Milo is the most famous sculpture from
ancient Greece. It depicts the Greek goddess
Aphrodite. The piece is renowned for the skillful
portrayal of the female torso.

- Triremes were swift and agile fighting ships that
were the foundation of the Athenian navy. They
could be used to ram or board enemy ships.

- The Theater of Dionysos was home to some of the
earliest staged drama, specifically Greek
tragedies. It is, historically, the most
important theater in the Western world and was
the birth place of the dramatic arts and our
modern theater.
