3Mission StatementThe Education Job
Information Center (95-EJIC) is a specialized
subject division within the Central Library of
the Brooklyn Public Library. The Centers
mission is to provide the residents of the
Borough of Brooklyn and all others with
information and services to meet their education
and career goals. The division provides this
information through a wide range of print and
non-print resources, and through on- and off-site
programs.
4EJIC Chronology
- 1974/1975 - Started as Learn Your Way Center
with two staff members - 1977/1978 - Learn Your Way Center and Job
Information Center Combined still with two staff
members - 1978/1979 - GED classes given, GED referral list
started, Career Counseling- College of Staten
Island, Learn Your Way Center named Job
Information Center, Began organizing collection
by subject headings - 1979/1980 - EIC grant begins 35,000.00 first
year, 43 hour service week to full service hours
of Central Library - 1983/1984 - CUNY SUNY Forms Distributed,
Typewriter for resume use-purchased with New York
EIC grant funds - 1984/1985 Ten staff, Two full time staff as
career counselors conducts one on one career
counseling by appointment - 1987/1988 - SIGI PLUS purchased
- 1988/1989 - Nine staff members
- 1989/1990 - End of EIC grant
- 1991/1992 - Loss of one day of service-Central
Library closed due to budget cuts

- Six staff, Began youth focus as part of LSCA
Grant - 1992/1993 - Shift of entire subject heading to
circulating only- test and study guides, - Began Brooklyn College Guidance and Counseling
intern program- three interns at first, TRAIN
pilot site - 1993/1994 - Return of Monday service to Central
Library 10-6, sixty one hours, LSCA focus
immigrant service, JOBS PLUS, SIGI PLUS, TRAIN - 1995/1996 - LSCA focus workshop series, Begin
research for Internet access, Change of Name to
Education, Job and Computer Center (EJCC). (In
later years, the original name of EJIC was
adopted again. ) Received grants from Bill Gates
(Gates Foundation) for installation of Microsoft
Computers all across BPL. - 1999/2000 - LSTA (Library Services Technology
Act) grant received - 2007 - STEP (Skills Training Employment
Project) grant received
