Which world do we want or deserve?

There is an international scientific consensus
that increasing levels of man-made greenhouse
gases are leading to global climate
change.Explore this issue with the aid of recent
news statements, web casts and Royal Society
reports.

UK viewpoint 1
  • We are experiencing
  • Changes in animal and plant life.
  • Increases in temperatures in summer and it is
    milder in winter.
  • Extreme and unpredictable weather conditions.
  • We may soon be experiencing
  • Deterioration in soil quality and water
shortages, which will have a serious effect for
    our farms.
  • Greater risk of tropical disease - malaria may
return to Southern England after 300 years.
  • Changes in the Gulf Stream.

UK viewpoint 2
  • The Department of Trade and Industry estimates
that weather related economic losses in the UK
have increased over 10 fold in the last 40 years.
    http//www.dti.gov.uk/ (2)
  • By the 2050s sea levels will increase by 14-18cm
and by the 2080s by 23-36 cm
  • Water rationing for irrigation will become
    increasingly frequent http//www.nationaltrust.org

  • We all can make a difference by taking energy
efficient measures in our homes (and on our
    roads) now www.est.org.uk (4)

Energy the environment
  • Almost all our energy comes from burning fossil
fuels, which releases harmful gases that change
    our climate.
  • By being energy efficient we can reduce our
energy needs and reduce our contribution to
climate change. There are many ways we can do
this, but your contribution will make
a difference. We have provided a useful list of
cheap and simple steps with a 10 point energy
plan to help you to address the small changes you
    can execute www.est.org.uk (4)
  • Adopt a low carbon lifestyle
  • By following the 'Low-carbon Lifestyle Guide', we
can all reduce the environmental impact of our
homes and often save money in the process.

  • DO YOU KNOW THE SIZE OF
  • YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT?

Saving the environment and saving money
  • Wasted money!
  • A PC left on overnight costs 60 /year
  • A PC left on standby overnight costs 25 / year.
  • A TV left on standby overnight costs 12 / year.
  • Take a moment to thinkswitch it off!
  • Saving money!
  • Fitting an energy saving light bulb can
  • save up to 7 a year on electricity!

Renewable resources?
  • Renewable energy is energy that is derived from
an inexhaustible sources such as wind, sun, sea
or replaceable sources such as waste products and
    crops
  • Wind Solar Ground source heat pumps
  • Small Scale Wind Small Scale Hydro
    Biomass
