Before you write

• What kind of paper is this?
• Expository, social science analysis.
• Not editorial, though its OK to have an opinion.
• Not a news report leave that to the newspapers.
• And not a lot of other things too . . .
• Who is your audience?
• Educated newspaper readers
• What are the goals of your paper?
• Its a synthesis paper.

What goes into the paper?

• Thesis statement
• This organizes everything that follows.
• Ironically, you may write it last.
• Evidence
• Refer to your course readings AND your newspaper
  / journal articles.
• Other detailed research is not necessary or even
  desirable.
• Quotations are good.

Manage Your Musts

• You must present an organized paper.
• The Master said, A paper has a beginning,
• a middle, and an end.

Manage Your Musts II

• You must provide references (footnotes or
  otherwise) for all ideas taken from other works,
  all quotes, and all facts that are not common
  knowledge.
• Otherwise, you are committing plagiarism.

• Two choices. Either
• Parenthetical references, with full references
  provided in bibliography
• Full footnotes, with no bibliography needed

• Books require Author, Title, Place of Publication
  and Publisher, Date of Publication
• Articles require Author, Article Title,
  Publication title, Date.
• Internet newspapers and magazines require all
  above, plus URL and date accessed.

Before you submit

• Revise Thesis Statement
• It must be the best sentence in the paper.
• Check spelling and grammar
• The computers spill chicken is not suffice to
  cache all spilling errs and gamma mistook.
• (My computers spell and grammar checker gave
  that sentence a clean bill of health.)
