  interpreted within the state government.

  Missouri has a constitution and why the state
  makes and enforces laws.

Why Do We Have a Government?

• Governments were set up to make rules and make
  sure everyone follows them.
• RULES LAWS
• Help to prevent conflicts
• Provide for peoples safety welfare
• Protects peoples rights

Different Kinds of Government

• King and Queen
• Members of a special family that claimed the
  right to run the country and make laws.
• Dictator
• Take control of a government by force and claim
  the right to make all laws, giving people few
  rights.
• Democracy
• Government run by the people
• People choose the ruler by election
• People have more rights and responsibilities

• American people elect leaders
• National Government 50 State governments
• Makes laws and provides services for the entire
  country
• Runs the armed forces (military)
• Makes treaties
• Prints paper money and makes coins
• Takes care of the elderly

State Government

• Established in 1821 when Missouri became the 24th
  state to join the Union.
• Protects the rights and freedoms of the people of
  our state.
• Missouri Constitution calls for a General
  Assembly, governor, and courts.

• Job is to carry out the laws of the state

• Supreme Court
• Highest court in MO
• Reviews most important cases from other courts
• If a new law goes against the state constitution,
  it can reject the law.
• Circuit Court
• Lowest level court

• Handles cases involving crimes and disagreements
  over property and money

City Government

• Also known as Municipal government
• Run by a mayor city council
• Mayor is the head of the city government and
  carries out the law
• City Council makes laws and helps to run the city
  or town
• Both are elected by the people
• Some cities also have a city manager
• Takes care of the citys daily business
• Hired by the city council
