Title: EDC Electric Tutorial

1
EDC Electric Tutorial
  • What moves it

2
Soldering Safety
  • Three types of burns
  • Soldering Iron can inflict a really nasty burn
  • Know where the tip is at all times
  • Wear safety glasses
  • Do not breath the fumes
  • Wash your hands after handling solder

3
Soldering Basics
  • Joining two pieces of metal with a metal that has
    a lower melting point
  • Flux is a cleaning agent in the solder
  • Clean the metal with eraser/Scotchbrite
  • Joint should be mechanically secure
  • Cold solder joint

4
Crimping
  • Using a tool to attach a connector to wire
  • Tug testing

8
Talking Switches
  • Poles and Throws - DPDT
  • (Momentary) Center Off
  • (On) Off (On)

9
Torque
10
Equal Torque
11
Torque and Speed
  • More Torque Less Speed
  • More Speed Less Torque

12
Your Motor
  • No Load Speed
  • Stall Torque
  • Speed varies with voltage
  • Current varies with torque

How far do you need to go today?
  • Measure Motor Shaft Diameter with Calipers
  • How far does each rotation take you?

Friction Drive
  • The motor shaft drives the robot by rubbing
    against an idler wheel
  • Simple and effective
  • Wheel wear
  • Slips

17
Gear Drive
  • Positive connection with the wheels
  • Does not wear the wheels
  • Torque can turn corners
  • Requires gears
  • Requires good mechanical skills to build
  • Torque can cause gears to slip / break

18
Belt Drive
  • Similar to gears
  • Slips if Overtorqued
  • Easier to build than gear drive
  • Requires Pulleys and Belts
  • Belts can slip off if not properly designed
