12Internet2
- Internet2 is intended to be a testbed that
prompts the next generation of internet
applications - What sorts of new applications are enabled when
there is high bandwidth, low latency internet
access?
13Why Latency is Important
- Interactive applications usually require fast
feedback--if the ping time is over about 150 ms
it starts to impinge on human reaction time. FPS
gamers begin to avoid games if ping times exceed
this
14High Performance Computing
- Clusters are proliferating as cost drops.
Significant clusters can be created for less than
50K, but - Smaller sites still isolated from big
installations why not develop on local cluster,
send big jobs to the big clusters - Want to tie smaller clusters together into a
shared resource, not isolated islands - Large shared distributed databases are
important - This addresses mostly the bandwidth side of I2.
There are classic administrative/security/chargeba
ck/social issues to solve. Not everyone would be
happy about their cluster being used by others - Re-inventing the social structures surrounding
mini/mainframe culture with new technology
15High Performance Computing
- Applications
- Graphics rendering, discrete event simulation,
oceanography, meteorology, physics, large scale
online databases
16Access Grid
- Large-scale video, audio, and text (jabber)
conferencing improve the effectiveness of
distributed scientific collaborations by
providing a natural and persistent virtual
meeting space - This can include everything from large, dedicated
rooms with wall displays to PCs with a web cam - This places a greater emphasis on low latency and
multicast capabilities - http//portal.accessgrid.org/
17Access Grid
18Performance / End-to-End Diagnostics
- Automated detection of faults anomalies,
diagnostics, security, and performance issues - Optimizing network applications often requires a
guru on call, and the problem often crosses
multiple administrative domains - http//middleware.internet2.edu/e2ed/

20Videoconferencing
- Megaconference VI Dec 2004, 372 sites (all
continents except Antartica) - est. 3000 people,
15 hours long - Gigaconference 5 Aug 2005, over 20 sites, 4
hours, showcase of high-end, high-performance
videoconferencing, gt1Mbps, 30 frames/s - Internet2 Commons framework for collaboration,
IP collaborative technologies

25And before we connect
- Perfect/update internal infrastructure
- Disseminate information within NPS approach each
