Wireless Bridge Modes
  • Root Mode A bridge that acts as the hub to a
    group of bridges.
  • Non-Root Mode A member bridge of a group that
    is not the Root Bridge.
  • Access point Mode Allows the bridge to
    function as an Access Point.
  • Repeater Mode Allows a bridge to relay traffic
    from one bridge to another.

16
Wireless Workgroup Bridges
  • Wireless Workgroup Bridge A bridge that links
a group of LAN devices appearing as a single
    client to a WLAN.

Fat and Thin Access Points
  • Thin APs are paired with a wireless LAN switch
or controller to offer additional functionality
    and centralization over Fat APs.
  • Fat (Thick or Smart) APs are "fat" because they
operate autonomously as members of a
    decentralized WLAN.

Power over Ethernet Devices
  • Power over Ethernet, (PoE) is a system to
delivery DC voltages over CAT-5 Ethernet cabling
to power network devices. This removes the
problem of having AC power at all locations where
network devices are needed. Approved IEEE 802.3af
    for PoE, June 2003.

36
PoE Devices
  • Injector The Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) to
couple DC power onto the CAT-5 Ethernet cable.
  • PoE compatible device - Powered Device (PD) that
can directly accept the DC power from the CAT-5
    Ethernet cable.

37
PoE Devices
  • Tap/Splitter A device that picks-off the DC
power and routes it to a non-compatible PoE
    device.
  • Passive Tap a device that picks-off the power
without modifying or regulating the PoE voltage,
    (48 vdc).
  • Active or Regulated Tap a device that
picks-off the power and reduces and or regulates
the PoE voltage, (5, 6, or 12 vdc).
