ESL Endorsement and TESOL Certification
Preparing to teach ESL locally and globally

Why ESL Endorsement or TESOL Certification?
  • Nationally, the number of ESL students has
increased dramatically over the past decade
  • The ESL endorsement is newly available for
    Michigan educators
  • Many teaching opportunities in the US and
    internationally (see www.daveseslcafe.com/joblist
for a sample of current job listings in ESL

3
About ESL Endorsement and Certification
  • One of the fastest growing areas in English
education is the teaching of English to speakers
    of other languages (ESL/TESOL)
  • SVSU offers two programs in this area, which
together enable students in any academic field at
SVSU to obtain expertise in ESL/TESOL

4
ESL Endorsement
  • The ESL Endorsement is available for K-12
pre-service and in-service teachers who want to
work with English Language Learners in Michigan
    schools
  • The ESL Endorsement is a recent development in
Michigan with SVSU being 1 of 8 institutions
    offering this qualification

5
TESOL Certificate
  • The TESOL Certificate Program, while similar to
the endorsement, is designed especially for those
wishing to teach adults or work outside of
Michigan (i.e. those not wishing to become ESL
endorsed teachers in the State of Michigan)

6

From a teacher . . .
  • Last winter I worked with a group of five ESL
students at a local high school. Their teachers
were quite frustrated and did not know what to do
with these students . . . Cultural misconceptions
    and unrealistic teacher expectations compounded
the language problems . . . There is a solution
    hire an ESL Endorsed teacher.
