- Nationally, the number of ESL students has
increased dramatically over the past decade - The ESL endorsement is newly available for
Michigan educators - Many teaching opportunities in the US and

3About ESL Endorsement and Certification
- One of the fastest growing areas in English
education is the teaching of English to speakers
of other languages (ESL/TESOL) - SVSU offers two programs in this area, which
together enable students in any academic field at
SVSU to obtain expertise in ESL/TESOL
4ESL Endorsement
- The ESL Endorsement is available for K-12
pre-service and in-service teachers who want to
work with English Language Learners in Michigan
schools - The ESL Endorsement is a recent development in
Michigan with SVSU being 1 of 8 institutions
offering this qualification
5TESOL Certificate
- The TESOL Certificate Program, while similar to
the endorsement, is designed especially for those
wishing to teach adults or work outside of
Michigan (i.e. those not wishing to become ESL
endorsed teachers in the State of Michigan)

- Language requirement Two semesters of
college-level study in a single language other
than English or its equivalent. This requirement
can be altered for native speakers of a language
other than English.

11Timeframe for completion
- Endorsement/Certificate candidates should plan on
taking from 1 to 2 years to complete the courses
leading to endorsement/certification - It is possible, depending on course offerings, to
complete this program within one academic year
(including the summer/spring sessions for
