Title: NonCredit Portfolio Assessment for the CDC

1
Non-Credit Portfolio Assessment for the CDC
2
What is a Portfolio?
  • Assessment of a Prior Learning Portfolio for the
CDC is a way of meeting requirements for the
competency-level knowledge that one has gained
    through prior training and experience.
  • This option satisfies the requirements for the
Connecticut Director's Credential, but does not
    result in college credit.

3
Why Choose Non-Credit Portfolio Assessment?
  • Adults in early childhood and after school
programs often have knowledge, gained through
learning from work and life experience, that is
equivalent to what is taught in college courses.
  • Many working professionals in early care and
education do not want to spend the time or
undergo the expense of attending classes that
repeat what they already know in order to
complete the requirements for the CT Director's
    Credential.
  • Charter Oak State College believes that what a
person knows is more significant than how or
where such knowledge is acquired, and therefore
offers Portfolio Assessment as an appropriate,
convenient and economical substitute for course
    work.

4
What is the Process and How are Students
Supported?
  • An application is submitted indicating which
competency area or areas a student has chosen for
    Portfolio Assessment.
  • For each competency area, a list is provided that
presents outcomes of the administration areas
required with suggested types of supporting
    documentation.
  • A template is also provided with a guide and
sample parts of a narrative and types of
documentation as an example using the Personnel
    Management competency area.

5
How is the Portfolio Assessed?
  • The complete portfolio is submitted for review by
faculty experts who will evaluate it, using a
similar competency outcome grid that was
provided for the applicant, for approval and
fulfillment of the CDC administration competency
    requirements covered in the Portfolio.
