3Stay Certified
4Certificants Testimonials
- The main reason I continue to recertify my SPHR
status is to maintain control of my future.
Having the certification gives me the confidence
that even if my position is eliminated from a
merger I will be able to continue on in my
profession more easily than those without the
SPHR certification. Maintaining the
certification allows me to stay current with
changes in the profession and HR concerns
throughout the working world. - Dwight A.
Thompson, SPHR. - Just two days prior to losing my last job, I was
ecstatic to learn that I had passed the PHR exam.
The certification was either "preferred" or
"required" for many company posted employment
vacancies. Within two weeks from passing the exam
I was fortunate to receive two employment offers.
I believe the certification was a key factor in
landing my current job as a Human Resources
Manager. - Catherine Schlueter, PHR.

Credits
- Definition of Strategic Management Credit
- The processes and activities used to formulate
HR objectives, practices and policies to meet the
short- and long-range organizational needs and
opportunities, to guide and lead the change
process and to evaluate HRs contribution to
organizational effectiveness. - IMPORTANT
- The Strategic Management domain is designed to
capture all of the tasks that HR professionals
perform that fall OUTSIDE of the traditional HR
function. These require the HR professional to
learn more about the business of their
organization, and/or to partner with other
functional business leaders to achieve an
organizational goal.
23Strategic Management Activity Examples
- Trends in the Workplace seminar.
- Finance for Non-Financial Managers seminar.
- First-time participation in organizational
strategic planning process. - Analyzing the organizational culture and aligning
HR policies and procedures. - Participation in leadership training.
- Development of an organizational code of ethics.
REMEMBER You are only required to earn 15
strategic management credit hours out of the
total required 60 credit hours.
24Examples of Non-QualifyingStrategic Management
Activities
- Courses that instruct professionals on how to do
their jobs. - Participating in, rather than developing,
community-related activities. - Community involvement unrelated to your
organizations mission. - Courses on established HR techniques (e.g.,
change management) unless one can show that the
knowledge gained was used to develop a change
management initiative. - Establishing or initiating standard HR programs,
such as performance review policies or selecting
a health care provider. - Activities that bring your organization into
compliance with laws and/or regulations.
25Questions to Determine Strategic Credit
- Did the activity help to advance the mission of
your organization? - Did you perform benchmarking against other
organizations? - Did the new program require that you perform an
environmental scan? - Was the activity grass-roots or legislative in
nature? - Did the activity help influence a major
organizational change? - Did the activity include leadership training?
Change management? Setting ethical standards for
your organization?
